S. James Anaya → James Anaya—Relisted. He seems to be referred often enough to as S. James Anaya so it'll be good to see some more input on this. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 09:43, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

— appears to self-identify on his university biography page as James Anaya, is more likely to be known and referred to as "James" (rather than "S."), and James Anaya is more consistent with Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#People than S.James Anaya Bruceanthro (talk) 14:18, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

• huh... tough call here. At the moment I'm leaning towards Keep, simply because there's no clear course of action here. The references use both forms, with the U of Ari sources switching between the two themselves...

  Yes "S." or "James" does seem to have both a preferred written or formal appellation ie S. James Anaya .. plus a more familiar, less formal appellation ie James Anaya .. The effect of this is that book covers and title pages etc refer to Professor S. James Anaya, and inside the book, inside the article, or inside the media release it very rapidly shifts from the formal S. James Anaya to the less formal, more commonly (more often) used James Anaya!! Under the circumstances, of course, I myself favour the more common usage best matching the Wikipedia naming convention for people (which tends against titles etc in favour of simpler, more common first name - surname!) • What could help significantly here, as is true in almost all of these cases, is the addition of references to the article. They shouldn't be added only' to support a name change of course, which is why references tend to be a good means to settle these disputes/problems (since their somewhat "impartial").

Australian Associated Press Story citing Anaya

This story cites James Anaya on Indigenous affairs in Australia and he makes some fairly scathing criticisms of the Australian government's treatment of Aboriginals. It is probably worth noting on Wikipedia given the magnitude of the situation.

Some quotes from the article: A UN expert on indigenous rights says the ongoing intervention into remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory is overtly discriminatory and Australia must tackle its "entrenched" racism. But Professor Anaya believes that's not all that's been holding back indigenous Australia. He says NT intervention measures, including compulsory income management and blanket bans on alcohol and pornography, are "overtly discriminatory" and further stigmatise already stigmatised communities. They're incompatible with various international conventions, covenants, treaties and declarations, he said. "Some kind of special measures could be justified but they need to be narrowly tailored to the specific circumstances that exist," the rapporteur told reporters in Canberra. "(But currently) people who have a demonstrated capacity to manage their income are included. "It's inappropriate to their circumstances but is also, as expressed by them, demeaning." Prof Anaya was also scathing of Labor's insistence that housing funds would only flow if indigenous communities leased their land to the government for 40 years. "It's a mistake to assume that indigenous peoples ... aren't capable of taking care of their homes," he said. Prof Anaya said the Rudd government should "swiftly" reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act, which was suspended by the Howard government so the intervention's more extreme measures could be rolled out.

Given this is straight out of an article I don't know the rules on copy and paste etc. But naturally, any direct quotation of him from within the article would be noteworthy and I believe fair use.

Didn't notice this further passage at the end of the article until just then: "I have been impressed by the strength, resilience and vision of indigenous communities determined to move towards a better future despite having endured tremendous suffering at the hands of historical forces and entrenched racism," he said at the end of his 11-day visit.--Senor Freebie (talk) 14:23, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it.
