The text mentions that in 1555 Jacques de Sores organised a play to insult the Pope. It is unclear from the text who was the target of his mocking. There were three popes in 1555: Pope Julius III (died in March), who was mostly known for a hedonistic lifestyle and his apparently inappropriate relationship with his favorite Innocenzo Ciocchi Del Monte, Pope Marcellus II (died in May), an experienced librarian who was sick for his entire short term and accomplished nothing, and Pope Paul IV, an experienced diplomat who is known for bringing the Papal States in conflict with Spain, for his authoritarian rule of the Church, for his open hostility to Protestant "heretics", and for his persecution of Jews.
