Opening comment edit

Jackpot is not in the Great Basin. The local watershed drains into Salmon Falls Creek, which subsequently flows to the Snake River. See the Great Basin article for details, but essentially the Basin is defined by the interior watershed that has no outlet to the sea.

Time Zone edit

For years a sign showing the border between the Mountain Time Zone and Pacific Time Zone has been located clearly to south of Jackpot. While I don't necessarily doubt the claim that Jackpot is Pacific Time de jure and Mountain Time de facto, I would like to see documentation of that. --Faustus37 (talk) 16:14, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Faa facilities directory shows Jackpot Hayden Field as bing in the Mountain Zone. Anyone wishing to disput that fact must first explain how such an important document got it wrong. Please don't cite web sites.Pacomartin (talk) 03:51, 6 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry kiddos, Code of Federal Regulations trumps all else. It says Jackpot is Pacific. Famartin (talk) 06:08, 6 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't the state have final authority in this matter? Please produce proof if you disagree.Pacomartin (talk) 04:22, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Short answer: no.
Long answer: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/261
U.S. Code § 261 - Zones for standard time; interstate or foreign commerce
(a) In general
For the purpose of establishing the standard time of the United States, the territory of the United States shall be divided into nine zones in the manner provided in this section. Except as provided in section 260a (a) of this title, the standard time of the first zone shall be Coordinated Universal Time retarded by 4 hours; that of the second zone retarded by 5 hours; that of the third zone retarded by 6 hours; that of the fourth zone retarded by 7 hours; that of the fifth zone retarded [1] 8 hours; that of the sixth zone retarded by 9 hours; that of the seventh zone retarded by 10 hours; that of the eighth zone retarded by 11 hours; and that of the ninth zone shall be Coordinated Universal Time advanced by 10 hours. The limits of each zone shall be defined by an order of the Secretary of Transportation, having regard for the convenience of commerce and the existing junction points and division points of common carriers engaged in interstate or foreign commerce, and any such order may be modified from time to time. As used in sections 261 to 264 of this title, the term “interstate or foreign commerce” means commerce between a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any possession of the United States and any place outside thereof.

U.S. Code § 262 - Duty to observe standard time of zones
Within the respective zones created under the authority of sections 261 to 264 of this title the standard time of the zone shall insofar as practicable (as determined by the Secretary of Transportation) govern the movement of all common carriers engaged in interstate or foreign commerce. In all statutes, orders, rules, and regulations relating to the time of performance of any act by any officer or department of the United States, whether in the legislative, executive, or judicial branches of the Government, or relating to the time within which any rights shall accrue or determine, or within which any act shall or shall not be performed by any person subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, it shall be understood and intended that the time shall insofar as practicable (as determined by the Secretary of Transportation) be the United States standard time of the zone within which the act is to be performed.

If this document were correct http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/262, then the businesses of Jackpot, the Post Office and Hayden Field are operating illegally. It may be a small airport but it is still the Faa. How do you simply ignore that fact? Pacomartin (talk) 11:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Convenience. The real world isn't cut and dry; there are shades of gray. That doesn't change what the legal time zone is, however. The local government (in this case, the County of Elko) could always petition to have Jackpot, and other areas of northern Elko County which follow Mountain Time, moved to that zone, but I suspect it isn't a high priority. In any case, until such a petition is made and accepted, the legal time zone of Jackpot is, and must be stated on Wikipedia to be, Pacific. Famartin (talk) 12:07, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
PS - Why do you even care? Are you from Jackpot? I'm just curious, I get the impression that its just something that grabbed your attention over on that board. If you aren't a local, then you really have no idea how locals here think. Just look up "Elko County Sagebrush Rebellion" or "Jarbidge Shovel Brigade" for an idea of what goes on out here. Triad Resort -- Vaporware edit

This resort shows no sign of ever coming to fruition and I have seen no mention of it in the news media since the article cited (Times-News). There is no sign of any construction and their Web site appears orphaned (no news since July 2008). Unless someone can find some news on them, this section should have some mention of the project's vaporware status. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.218.253 (talk) 00:00, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
