A few newspaper and magazine articles incorrectly stated that he was born in New York. Even his grave record is wrong on this point (which is not unusual). The 3 earliest census records for him that I've found (1905 New York State, 1920 Federal, 1925 New York State) all say that he was born in Italy. His death record from California says that he was born outside America. There are 4 passenger records for him, 2 from Italy to the US and 2 from and to the UK when he married Constance. In the record from the UK, traveling with his wife Constance, he states his exact date of birth and his place of birth as Lercara Friddi. In the record to the UK he states his occupation as film actor and that he is Italian. In the 1911 passenger record from Italy to the US he is traveling with his mother Giuseppa Lo Bue and it is stated that he was born in Lercara Friddi. In Nov 1902 his mother traveled from Lercara Friddi to New York with her 6 month-old son. On 3 May 1902 in Lercara Friddi there was a birth of Gaspare Biondolillo to Luigi Biodolillo and Giuseppa Lo Bue, matching his exact date of birth, his exact name, and his parents' exact names. This birth record is even online, a photograph of the original record, to which I linked.
His name is Gaspare Biondolillo on all the passenger records and the death record, not surprisingly since Gaspare is the proper Italian spelling of his name. "Gaspere" is a typo.
I am a professional genealogist specializing in Sicily and I stumbled upon this case when I was researching the ancestors of his nephew. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmalcolms (talk • contribs) 09:57, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the sources you state, familysearch.org and ancestry.com, are not reliable sources. Your reasoning above, while very scholarly is what is known as original research, or at best synthesis, and isn't allowed on WP. You may very well be correct, but until it can be sourced through reliable sources, it can't be added. But thank you for beginning a discussion on the talk page.
