Suicide? edit

I commented out the following statement from the article:

On 7 October 1986, he and his wife of 51 years took their lives by drug overdose, not wanting their minds to become dull or their bodies to decay.[citation needed]

I believe it is self-evident why it really needs referencing. —Super Cleverly (talk) 15:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I removed it and am asking the editor in question why they added it and why they removed your commenting out mark-up. I will also ask the editor who fact-tagged it to comment here. My concern here is that this material stayed in the article for nearly four months. Carcharoth (talk) 21:44, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Expanding article edit

My view is that material like that discussed above (on his death) should be removed if unsourced (which I just did), and carefully referenced if true, and rewritten in any case, and before details like that are added, the rest of the article should be fleshed out to describe his career. A good start would be to find an obituary and add that as a reference and add a brief outline of his life. Carcharoth (talk) 21:57, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... wow, I tagged this like a year ago, so it definitely should be removed at this point. The only reason that I didn't delete it outright at the time was a) The individual was not living and b) It didn't feel that it was entirely outrageous; I know there's a famous statistician/economist and his wife who did the same thing for the same reason, so I felt that maybe it could be sourced quickly, and it was better to try and have the information there if true... but even a month would be a long time to wait for a source, let alone a year. Other than that, he was just one of many individuals who were 90+ without a birth or death date at the time, so I was keeping my eye out on the article so see if anything popped up. Maybe you were thinking of this? Anyway, the death year is not sourced here. I have been unable to find a biography. I will ask User:JackofOz what their sources was. He might also know where to get hold of an obituary. Carcharoth (talk) 21:03, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
His year of death is given as 1986 in Who Was Who. The details mentioned about his death with his wife are found in newspaper obituaries: Michael Laurence, 'Why after 51 years a couple decided to die', Sydney Morning Herald, 10 October 1986. 'Bank Knight and Wife Found Dead', The Daily Telegraph, 9 October 1986.Dsp13 (talk) 21:44, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
