First to be baptised? edit

I've undone the addition that stated Ixtlilxochitl II was the "first Mexican" to be baptised. Usage of the term "Mexican" appearing here is a little ambiguous and ahistorical, so can't be sure in what sense this statement is made; but either way there were baptisms of indigenous New World people before this.

For example, the two Maya interpreters captured on the 1517 Cordoba expedition at Cabo Catoche in Yucatan—Julian and Melchior—were baptised on their return to Hispaniola. Another indio was captured by the 1518 Grijalva expedition in Tabasco, to be baptised Francisco. And then when Cortes finally arrives on the Gulf Coast in 1519, shortly after his landing at Santa Maria de la Victoria the 20 or so indio women who had been given to them (including La Malinche) were "immediately baptised". All this long before Cortes occupied Texcoco in 1520 and set up Ixtlilxochitl II as proxy ruler.

If by "Mexican" the ethnonym Mexica is meant, then that would not be accurate either, since Ixtlilxochitl was a native of Texcoco and therefore Acolhuan by identity/ethnicity, not Mexica. --cjllw ʘ TALK 00:41, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
