Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 3, 2007.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ...that the Itchen Navigation canal provided an essential trading route between the historic city of Winchester and the port of Southampton?

Itchen Valley navigaton

edit

Can anyone point me to a reliable reference that this is 'also known as the Itchen Valley Navigation'? Obviously I'm not including the many mirrors/copies of this article as reliable. Pterre (talk) 11:47, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I've never heard of it being called the Itchen Valley Navigation, even when I lived in the area (For over 20 years)

[1] - On the second page of the report it is refered to as the Itchen Valley Navigation. I live locally, and IIRC there are actually signs refering to it as the "Itchen Valley Navigation" as well, but that would be WP:OR so no use. As that report is from Winchester Council it should be seen as reliable enough for the purposes of this article. Pedro :  Chat  06:53, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, not really. That report has a heading 'Itchen Valley navigation project' which immediately starts talking about the 'Itchen Navigation heritage trail' so is contradictory and not reliable. All authoritative refs on the history of the subject that I recall refer to the canalised river simply as the Itchen Navigation, and I think it remains that in law. Pterre (talk) 08:43, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, on closer reading of the source it's not the best reference. I've removed the text from the article as uncited. Pedro :  Chat  08:47, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

More Material

edit

Whilst digging around regarding the previous thread I did find this. When I've got more time I'll read in more detail but it looks like a fine starting point (note also the cartography and bibliographic references) to add more to this article as well as supporting many of the articles about the villages along the route and the Itchen Way. Pedro :  Chat  08:57, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes that looks good. I've also got a couple of docs somewhere I'll dig out when I have time. Pterre (talk) 20:33, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Assessment

edit

I have assessed the article against the criteria for B-class.

  • Suitably referenced, with inline citations
  • Reasonable coverage - no obvious omissions or inaccuracies
  • Defined structure, with adequate lead   Done
  • Reasonably well written for grammer and flow
  • Supporting materials - Infobox, map, images, POI table
  • Appropriately understandable

The lead just needs expanding a little so that it adequately introduces the subject and summaries the content of the article. With a little more work, I think we could go for a Good Article assessment. Bob1960evens (talk) 17:51, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The lead has been expanded to summarise the contents, and I think it now deserves a "B". Areas for improvement include
  • a little more on the period between 1869 and the 1960s   Done
  • the diversion of the towpath   Done
  • the flora and fauna.   Done

Images

edit

I've added a couple of pictures that I hope add some good EV as well as breaking up the text. I'm not sure about having them all right aligned, and welcome any tweaks to formatting and positioning. Pedro :  Chat  10:38, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
