editIn Fred Waitzkin’s book ‘Mortal Games’ he mentions seeing Israel Zilber in Washington Square park during the Kasparov-Karpov tournament of 1990 shortly after game 4 of the match. This would make it 1990-10-17.
He was exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia, talking to himself and muttering chess moves as well as making a reference to Kasparov.
He was shivering from the cold and when Fred offers him one of his winter coats he refuses it, saying, “I can do better.” This is the last time he was seen by Waitzkin.
