Suffering complications from his stroke or dementia?

Isaac Hayes was a call in guest on the Adam Carolla show on 04/09/2008. He seemed to suffer from stuttering and was unable to talk in depth about anything. He didn't seem to be able to remember much from his earlier days with his record label, or from his work on South Park with the creators. I think he suffered more complications from that stroke than has been let on, he reminded me of a Professor I had in college who had suffered from a stroke. Perhaps this should be added to his article. 72.209.12.250 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.209.12.250 (talk) 15:45, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely. If you listen to the mp3 provided in the article it seems possible that he's suffering from Aphasia which is pretty common after a stroke.

Not seen in public?

The article said he hasn't been seen in public since his stroke... err.. a quick check says he was present at the 'Blues Ball Guitar Party' in October 2006, with his baby son, who born in APRIL OF THIS YEAR !! it's on his web site and other sites reporting the show. So I am removing that section of the article. Magic Pickle 12:43, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

quitting conspiracy?

Wow, that's interesting stuff. I've only read half so far, but I definitely think some of the information should be added to the article. Roger Friedman is a verifiable source. --Jelligraze 02:21, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
It's already mentioned I believe: "Some have speculated that the statement was made in Hayes's name, but not by Hayes himself, as he suffered a stroke in January and has not been seen in public since. There have been no public comments from Hayes as to his stance." File:Glenstollery.gifPOW! 02:29, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, it was added yesterday after Andrew brought it to attention. I was simply showing my support for the information being added, since it is still new information and could be subject to reversion. --Jelligraze 03:27, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I added it without having seen Andrew's comments.  :) User:Zoe|(talk) 17:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
That's good. I hope more people are becoming aware of this. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but if Isaac Hayes is being forced into something he doesn't want to do/approve of, then more people should become aware. I think their going to kill off chef tonight on South Park, I don't know for sure though :-( --Jelligraze 20:01, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
I came to the talk page to say I had a theory- that the Church of Scientology threatened to revoke his membership if he didn't quit- and bam, I see this. Not too far off from the crazy crap the CoS has done in the past. Ace ofspade 23:43, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Just got done watching the show. I knew they'd kill him off. If this conspiracy is true then it's a shame. --Jelligraze 03:32, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Hes' not dead, he's just resting. User:Zoe|(talk) 23:17, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, the plot thickens... www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,18647,00.html 71.96.218.203 21:33, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
No, it doesn't. Amy Harnell is the very person accused of lying about the first press release. This is just her denying that she lied. Big deal. Someone needs to interview Issac Hayes himself and not his Scientology rep. Chiok 22:35, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
[<---reverse direction] Thank you for pointing that out. For those who don't know, Hayes's resignation was apparently submitted by his agent who is a Scientologist, casting doubt on whether Chef himself actually wanted to quit. So all the accusations of "Hayes is a hypocrite!" may be wrong in the end. Keep watching the story as it unfolds. --ILike2BeAnonymous 22:45, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
This is all irrelevant anyway as Hayes has been seen attending public events since his stroke and has not withdrawn, retracted or altered the previous statements on the matter, as far as I'm aware. Magic Pickle 12:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
This entire section is totally irrelevant. Hayes is a wonderful musician and composer. If this is supposed to be a serious biographical article about Hayes, why the need for gossip,here-say,Carolla,etc. If I want to read tabloid articles,I'll buy the Enquirer.
I say delete the entire sorry mess.BrianAlex —Preceding unsigned comment added by BrianAlex (talkcontribs) 22:00, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Lost access to royalties?

The article linked above also says that Hayes doesn't have access to royalties from many of the hits he has written:

"The truth is, Hayes has a sly sense of humor and loves everything about "South Park." It’s provided him a much-needed income stream since losing the royalties to the many hits he’s written, such as “Shaft” and “Soul Man,” in the mid-1970s. Even though he’s one of America’s most prolific hit writers, Hayes has been denied access to profits from his own material for almost 30 years."

This is not mentioned or explained in the article if it is true. --80.121.151.50 20:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Opie & Anthony

When did the Opie & Anthony interview air? Anybody know if it was live or taped, and if it was taped, when? The link I included says he had a stroke on January 17. User:Zoe|(talk) 00:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Merge with Return of the Chef

This section is not about Hayes at all. It's better off with The Return of Chef, since the primary focus of that section is the South Park episode. I dont see much that should be in this article other than that it's Parker and Stone's response to Hayes' quitting. hateless 20:22, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Oppose merge. Agree that section has too much infor not related to Hayes, but I think that this article should document his dispute with South Park over the trapped in the closet episode and the subsequent act of killing him off because he left the project. A merge would set this information back far too much. Instead it should be rewritten from the point of reference of its relevance to Hayes. savidan(talk) (e@) 00:15, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree with merging. There's nothing about Isaac Hayes and if you were looking for this episode you would go to the South Park article
Definitely doesn't belong in the Isaac Hayes article. Especially long paragraphs about L Ron H etc. Ashmoo 07:05, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm removing the merge request. Thanks for the trimming Ashmoo, I think there's still some snips that can be made but I'm satisfield most of the irrelevant material is no longer there. hateless 22:56, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

royalty

what the heck? there's no mention of it on the ada page, and theres no sources about it... [unsigned]

Opening Paragraph

I decided to be bold and remove the bit about the circumstances of Hayes' leaving Southpark in the opening paragraph. It's covered in detail later in the article anyway, and if we put in-depth information about notable events related to his other careers into the intro paragraph, it'd bloat very quickly. It seemed more appropriate to just trim it out entirely. Nortelrye 17:16, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Information on his music?

You know Isaac Hayes had a pretty long & illustrious career *before* South Park. Looking at some of the other articles on musicians, why wouldn't any of his hits be mentioned or more focus be given to the things that actually got him famous (his musical career)? I seriously doubt anyone started watching South Park because of him, likewise vice versa.

You've got a good point, there. Personally, I think the south park/scientology controversy ought to be moved to a seperate article, or at least a sub-page. It's got nothing to do with the majority of Hayes' life or work, but it seems to make up the bulk of the article. For somebody who's had such a fruitful career, that hardly seems appropriate. Update/Expansion

I'm putting stuff here for public consumtion before I update and expand this page. Feel free to discuss or what-have-you. NinaEliza 07:06, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't subscribe to the congressional roll call (300 bucks), so the last link will have to do.

Some idiot is posting false info

I've tried to remove the vandalism about Isaac Hayes' "death" (made up of whole cloth by some nameless moron.) However, while the erroneous death info appears on the main page, when I go to edit it, it *doesn't* appear in the edit box -- meaning I can't erase it. Any thoughts? 172.145.249.76 01:51, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

It wasn't vandalism, seems to me YOUR the Moron. Did it occur to you to check the news when you seen on Wikipedia that he had died? --70.149.134.54 (talk) 20:31, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Note the date of the post you're commenting on. It's referring to an earlier episode of vandalism in 2007. CFLeon (talk) 21:13, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Press F5 on your browser. This vandalism has already been removed. --Tilman 05:52, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Update - It appears that he passed away early this morning according to the news[1][2]. No details as of yet. I'll let someone else update the article since I'm just here to read what the wiki had to say about it. --JustPassingThrough 3:14 pm, 10 August 2008 (CST) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.53.84.235 (talk)

Still more vandalism, we need to lock this article 69.250.71.229 (talk) 03:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Prominence of South Park reference

I think having the Chef part in the opening paragraph gives it undue prominence, giving the casual reader the impression that Isaac Hayes is just this guy who played the chef in South Park. I've moved it to an appropriate place chronologically. --Tony Sidaway 01:50, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

I agree. the reader should know that he was (most likely) asked to be on South Park because of who he is, not that he is who he is because of South Park. Ya know? --AMK1211 0:55, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Four African-American Oscar winners?

This doesn't seem right:

After Hattie McDaniel, James Baskett and Sidney Poitier, he became only the fourth performer of African descent to ever receive an Academy Award.

since the list leaves out Halle Berry. Can someone straighten out what's actually being said there? --Randal L. Schwartz 02:30, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Was Halle Berry already born in 1972? --Tilman 06:19, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
Yes, he got the Oscar way, way before Halle was around. However this isn't referenced and looks to me like original research. I'll remove it. --Tony Sidaway 07:24, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
The point I was claiming is that it said there were a total of four A-A Oscar winners ever. But since the list didn't include Halle Berry, it had to be wrong. If it had just said "was the fourth A-A to get the oscar", I would not have perked up. --Randal L. Schwartz 13:56, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
Or Denzel Washington. Or Louis Gossett Junior. Or Cuba Gooding, Jr. Or Whoopie Goldberg (all off the top of my head).64.132.218.4 22:48, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Stone and Parker Catholic?

I object to this sentence in the entry: "However, some question the equality of Parker and Stone's treatment towards religion, citing that while they may poke fun at their own religion (Catholicism) from time to time, it is never to the same extremes they have shown towards other religions (such as Mormon and Scientology, which have both been completely ridiculed and discredited on the show)".

  • Firstly, I think Stone is Jewish, not Catholic.
  • Secondly, while elements the Mormon faith were ridiculed in one episode of South Park, the value of the belief system in the Mormon character's happy family life were strongly emphasised and dealt with with some tact. Scientology I agree, however was pretty much ridiculed on the show in "Trapped In The Closet".
  • Thirdly, South Park does make fun of Catholicism fairly heavily. Take the episode "Red Hot Catholic Love" (the title should be a giveaway!) - where the head of the Catholic faith turns out to be a giant spider, and where all the Catholic priests (bar one) turn out to be child molesters. Catholicism also comes under heavy fire in the episode "Bloody Mary". All in all, I'd say that Catholicism and (to a lesser extent) Judaism get as much fun poked at them by the show as Mormonism or Scientology.
