A nice side benefit, but...

Is it really reasonable to say "I-87 and its Autoroute 15 successor provide a very popular New York-to-Montréal route because of the breathtaking scenery."? They are a popular route in this corridor because they consitute the most direct major through route, not because they're scenic. 18.173.1.42 21:02, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I really don't think the scenery or Expo 67 caused the construction of the Northway. The road was on the original interstate maps submitted in the early/mid 1950's....I'm also not aware highways in that era were controversial

When the Adirondack Northway was built it was named the most scenic highway in the US, and has in the past won awards to that effect, so there is some citation should someone want something similar stated, its not just opinion. I however dont see the need for it, though someone should look up and see what and who did bestow these flattering remarks on the Northway and have them cited on the page, perhaps in its own section in the article (Rewards or Scenery as possible titles?). Also, in history it should be mentioned that the Thruway originally had plans on doing a toll spur from the main line at Albany and go to the Canadian border, as well as the Taconic State Parkway had plans for its parkway to continue north to the Canadian border originally. Either of these would have made the Northway to have never been built. They should be considered at least as somewhat precursor plans to the Northway. Perhaps more info is also needed on US Route 9 and US Route 9W which i-87 supplanted, the effects on downtowns and villages along the way.

346 or 333?

346 or 333 miles? The article says the former, the infobox the latter. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.65.224.103 (talk) 19:41, 29 April 2007 (UTC).

Based on the NYSDOT traffic counts for 2005, the length is 333.49 miles. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 23:38, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Kinda curious where 346 came from then... -- NORTH talk 23:58, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Extention past Western Ave

The idea that the Northway was once supposed to continue past Western Ave is erroneous and an urban legend. NEVER was it supposed to do anything more than what it does now. Yes, there were plans for a mid-crosstown arterial that would have linked i-90 (the free part) with i-787 and i-90/thruway but that had nothing to do with why the northway ends at western ave. it ends there because it ends there! yes it looks like it would fit an exit for the thruway very comfortably, and it will eventually, but no the northway was never to continue to parallel the thruway all the way to exit 23. NO website on cancelled or current highways in the capital district verifies this idea of extending all the way to i-787 and thruway exit 23, gribblenation or capitalhighways or any number of good websites.24.182.142.254 23:51, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

State law lists a "Southside Route" that was built as I-787 from the Thruway to downtown, and was proposed to continue northwest parallel to the Thruway to at least the city line west of Krumkill Road. [2] labels Route 910F/SH 59008 (the latter number also on [3]), which is the part of the extension in Guilderland, as the "Southside Route". The Albany County portion of the state law includes the part outside Albany: "beginning at a point on the western city line of Albany, west of Krumkill road, thence running generally northwesterly, to a point on the west Albany city line west of Fuller road". So it was planned. --NE2 05:16, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

You are confusing and jumbling together several different highways. The southside route is an old name for what eventually became labelled as I-787. The other highways you are jumbling with this highway are the Crosstown Connection (NY route 85), the cancelled Midtown Connection from the current Corporate Woods exit of I-90 to the I-787/Thruway exit, and also the South Mall Expressway. Camelbinky (talk) 18:14, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Which part was pushed by Moses?

This article is in Category:Robert Moses projects. Is that referring to the Deegan, or did he have something to do with the Northway? --NE2 04:59, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

NY 912Q merge proposal

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was support merge. – TMF 13:24, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

The only notable point about this route relates to the Northway's construction; otherwise, it's an unremarkable exit ramp. – TMF 22:55, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

"Lake George Connector" is likely a neologism as well - the only three Google results are all roadgeek sites. – TMF 23:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

To the second thing, says Lake George Connector. And for the first thing, give the thing a shot. I can get it to GA quickly, and I'd like to keep it.Mitch32contribs 20:39, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't see what's there to "give it a shot". Its only claim to notability is that it was once part of the Northway. Otherwise, it's a half-mile long unsigned roadway that is essentially an exit ramp, and I don't see why this should get an article when I don't believe that sub-one mile long signed routes should. I've posted this discussion to WT:USRD. – TMF 02:47, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I support a merge, possibly into a separate Northway article if this one gets too long, unless Mitch can show that there's a lot more history. --NE2 09:36, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Got one condition if its gonna be merged. That 912Q be covered in a brand-new Northway article, and that a List of reference routes in Warren County, New York be made to cover 911E, 912Q and 917A in a summarized version as well. This would be beneficial, as to 1) clean up the huge list, and 2) make a summarized version of all 3 roads in the county. Or if that doesn't work: List of highways in Warren County, New York to cover all roads with summarization. Either will work, but that's the only way I'll accept a merge of NY 912Q.Mitch32contribs 10:42, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Why does it need to be summarized in a list if it's summarized in the Northway article? --NE2 11:43, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

The Northway should be a separate article, the Thruway is. The Northway is distinct from the rest of I-87 and includes Fuller Road Alternate (unsigned reference route 910F and NOT part of I-87).Camelbinky (talk) 08:11, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't see any reason why this was split back out. My opinion on merging 912Q is the same now as it was a year ago, when I proposed it. (I'm rehashing this discussion as it was brought up on WT:USRD.) – TMF 07:09, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I support merging 912Q to I-87, and to a future Northway article (once a decent article about it can be made). As it is now, it appears to be simple a long exit ramp and would make more sense to mention it in the history of the Northway. --Polaron | Talk 12:48, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

If no one objects to the merge in the next couple of days, I'll close this out and go ahead with it. – TMF 22:34, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

287 has its own page

Does it really make sense to get into what Interstates 287 junctions with on the I-87 page when 287 has a page for that purpose already?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.15.125.156 (talkcontribs) 22:43, July 10, 2006

Infobox major intersections

The infobox for Interstate 87 has 11 junctions, one more than the rule. All of the roads listed in the infobox are major, with the Palisades Parkway being the shortest overall. However, the Garden State Parkway, although longer than the Palisades Parkway, is only a few miles in NY and is mostly in NJ. Any suggestions on what route to eliminate? I vote for the Palisades Parkway, but I would like some feedback. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 21:16, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

It's based on level priority. The Palisades is a majority in NY than NJ, look at mileage. Get your facts straight and practice on other state's articles to get the idea of how to edit first. Mitch32(Any fool can make a rule, And any fool will mind it.) 19:51, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

All i87 exit list merged.

Someone merged together the three i87 exit list together (Major Deegan, NY state thruway and Adirondack Northway) which is a great idea. Lot easier to read North-south, Montreal to NYc 66.249.83.224 (talk) 16:33, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Except that the exit numbers and mile markers reset each time the name of the road changes. Better to have three tables. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 02:30, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

The Rename

Since there is a proposed I-87 in Virginia and North Carolina, can I change the page's title to Interstate 87 (New York)? If you want to reply, talk to me at my talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ActivBowser9177 (talkcontribs) 23:23, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Once the new highway is signed, we can move it. Until then, it's a bit premature. Imzadi 1979  00:13, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
I agree with Imzadi. It may be necessary eventually. I would make the change when it becomes a highway with future status, assuming articles like that already exist for interstates that have not been officially signed yet. I do know that Future Interstate Highways exists to possibly serve that purpose. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 06:16, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Tolls

Ok here’s the rundown on the tolls: -Yonkers is not automatic. It’s a normal plaza, they are planning to upgrade it. -Tappan Zee Bridge is automatic -Spring Valley is... a mess. Cars and vehicles with E-ZPass go through the gantry, trucks/buses/trailers without E-ZPass go to the booth. -Harriman is a gantry for E-ZPass and a booth for tickets -Albany is a not automatic, it’s a traditional plaza (and AWFUL to navigate - don’t get me started :)) Peterjack1 (talk) 16:52, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

/* 10 junctions Max! */

Title speaks for itself. For this article I suggest we limit the junctions to limited-access highwaysNeedforspeed888 (talk) 19:35, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

That's not really a suggestion. Many years ago, articles used to have lengthy junction lists in their infoboxes, and in several cases, the infobox ended up longer than the article itself. We settled on 10 as the limit based on feedback at FAC, so please keep to that limit. Imzadi 1979  13:33, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
@Peterjack1: as noted, this is a decade-old-plus consensus. Please stop re-inserting junctions in excess of the 8–10 rule. Imzadi 1979  19:40, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Merge

What do you guys say about merging Major Deegan Expressway with this article since it is entirely concurrent with I-87. There’s no article exclusively for the Adirondack Northway, and there’s a short segment of that highway that’s NOT part of I-87.

I'd rather keep it separate. The expressway article has a good amount of history in it that would bloat the full interstate article. It is also well referenced. It would be a shame to merge it. It could also theoretically pass GAN; small articles can still be good articles. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 01:57, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Route major junction infobox: U.S. 9 vs. U.S. 2

@Peterjack1: Why do you think that U.S. 9 should not be in the infobox but U.S. 2 should be? U.S. 9 is an important corridor in its own right, going from Canada to Delaware. U.S. 2 is important, but it does not directly interchange with the interstate. U.S. 9 does. In fact, U.S. 11 meets U.S. 9 far before it reaches U.S. 2, when traveling east. Just because U.S. 9 follows Interstate 87 for a large portion of its length does not mean it should not show up in the infobox: Actually, it means that it must show up at least once in the junction list, particularly where the parallel routes section begins. The parallel routes aspect is significant. I thought having U.S. 11 and saying "to U.S. 9 and U.S. 2" would be a fair compromise, but I guess you do not see it that way. I would prefer that U.S. 9 have its own junction entry, focusing on the last exit in NY, but that would bring the list to 11 entries, over 10. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 01:47, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Yes, it is a major corridor, but US 9 intersects 87 many, many times and for most of the North Country is right next to it. So we keep it to the exit list, otherwise we’d have to list every time 87 meets 9 in the major junctions. US 2 is the bridge to Vermont, which is really important.

@Peterjack1: Of course we should not list U.S. 9 every single time. I completely agree that that would be ridiculous. However, we are also able to only list it once; that happens a lot. I also agree that the U.S. 2 bridge to Vermont is important, which is why I don't mind that U.S. 2 be an add-on to the U.S. 11 junction listing. If I had to choose, I would rather have U.S. 9 as an entry because it actually interchanges with I-87 while U.S. 2 does not. My goal is to make it so that we do not have to choose between the two. Can we get rid of a junction, such as the Berkshire Connection junction that is largely covered by the next one (I-90) in the list? We could also just have 11 junctions and move on, which I would not mind either. What do you prefer? PointsofNoReturn (talk) 02:10, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
Edit: Can't do 11 junctions, per consensus. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 02:13, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Just put “to US 9” in the exit list. That’s where they all are. And trust me, I tried having 11 junctions, all 11 were important but now one is gone. They will crush us like cockroaches — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.203.55.238 (talk) 02:15, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

"To US 9" added. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 02:21, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

I can add it to both. PointsofNoReturn (talk) 05:01, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

All of the other ones are just in the exit list, so lets just keep it consistent. -Peterjack1

Adirondack Northway Separate Page

@Dough4872, I think the Adirondack Northway should be a separate article for I-87.Even though the Major Deegan Expressway was merged, not all of the Northway is part of I-87,as it starts at US 20,and not I-90.It is barely mentioned within I-87 so maybe a new article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.16.99.72 (talk) 16:33, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
