Talk:Interstate 84 in New York

None, frankly. To me signage pictures have only two uses in our road articles:
  • Placeholders until we get a better image.
  • If the sign itself illustrates something in the article or is discussed in the text (Examples from two NY articles include this, which complements a mention of an unusual excess of signage at a junction in here, and this pic, which ably illustrated the road's close proximity to MA in a section of NY 22 until Mitch says he had to remove it.
I should put up a list of some of the pics we could use. There's a great shot possible from just west of the Taconic junction where you can see both roadways climbing ahead into the mountains ... so far I have not found an angle that works in warm weather (and maybe there's a view I'm not aware of from Fahnestock State Park). I also plan to replace that lame view in the beginning with one of the road either climbing the ridge from the first exit or winding around the ridgeside, with the "ELEVATION 1,254 Feet" sign visible).

For the history section we can use one of Exit 5A under construction from NY 747. Daniel Case (talk) 20:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's what I was thinking. I try to avoid pictures focused on signage, but in this case it was the only shot I could get that wasn't cluttered up with cars. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 20:44, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pictures to get edit

Well, I have now gotten this article to the point I originally envisioned, after spending far more time on it than I expected. Other than getting a map, sources for the "Exits 9 and 14" section, it has no text issues. Once I address that I will be taking it up the PR/GA/FA ladder (but don't expect that to happen the day after I write this).

I do think, however, the route description section could get two better pics:

  • Port Jervis area. I think it might be best to violate my usual practice of preferring pictures that look generally in the direction the route description is using and take something looking out over the road from near its height of land on the Gunks, looking west over the Port Jervis area, so we can understand the point of the scenic overlooks there. Looks from the map and satellite photos that there might be an open view near the eastbound overlook, from the grass, somewhere around 41°22′22″N 74°38′19″W / 41.37278°N 74.63861°W / 41.37278; -74.63861. I also recall that the trees on the mountain are kind of scrubby, so it might be possible for the adventurous photographer (or me, when the weather is warm again) to get something better than the current shot shows.
  • West of Taconic exit. I have been searching for a long time for a place to get the view from around here (41°32′20″N 73°46′34″W / 41.53889°N 73.77611°W / 41.53889; -73.77611, where from the west headed east you can see both roadways stretching away past the rock cuts and up the mountains. (It looks like the clearing visible on the sat photo, right next to the onramp from the Taconic south to I-84 east, might have it if it's accessible from the road, or anywhere).
Update: this clearing is now a developed cul-de-sac. Having visited it I am less sure it will provide the desired view. The farmland on the southwest of the exit looks like a better bet. Daniel Case (talk) 17:49, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Once we have these and have sourcing for the missing exits we have a kick-ass article. I put these photo possibilities here so that anyone else interested can take a crack. Daniel Case (talk) 23:29, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Remove empty “old exit” column from exit list. edit

I cannot find any evidence of exit numbers being changed on I-84 from a sequential system to a mileage system, as the article had claimed. As such, I removed these “new” exit numbers and put the current numbers back in where they belong. I am having trouble removing the empty “old exit” column. Someone should get rid of that for the time being. Needforspeed888 (talk) 04:09, 16 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
