Flag for IRFU entries

I have just reverted an anon who inserted the Flag of the Republic of Ireland in all IRFU entries. This has been discussed before at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rugby_union, and that is where it needs to be taken by anyone who feels that the Irish Tricolour should be used in this context. It is indeed regrettable that the IRFU flag cannot be used (supposedly for copyright reasons??). But unilateral, undiscussed changes here will simply be reverted. Agree - the Republic of Ireland flag should not be placed here (as someone has restored it again). In fact 4 of the Ireland players in the list are from Northern Ireland (the other 4 being from the Republic), so the Republic of Ireland flag for all is completely wrong. 213.123.6.67 (talk) 08:01, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Country Names or Initials needed alongside flags?

I'm not sure that this is the ideal forum to raise this question, as it is probably relevant to thousands of articles, and has probably been raised elsewhere before, and perhaps settled before. But I'm initially raising it here because here is the Talk Page of the article where I felt the need to raise it, and I don't know where the alternative right place might be, if it even exists.

My immediate issue was the difficulty, at least for me, of distinguishing quickly between small Australian and New Zealand flags, but there are probably many other problems with flags, or flags alone, that can often be reduced or eliminated with initials or with the full country name. These include flags slowing the upload of an article to your computer, people not knowing which flag is which, especially but not only when it closely resembles another flag (as in Australia and New Zealand here), flags sometimes being controversial (as with whoever uploaded the flag of the Republic of Ireland here a while ago; nobody would have found the initials IRE or IRL offensive, or the name Ireland), flags not copying into a text file or into Wordpad (Microsoft's standard free word processor for Windows), and so on. There may be times when flags alone are more convenient for reasons of space, but that is no reason why initials or full names can't be used, with or without an accompanying flag, where space is not a problem, as in this article. Also even where space is a problem it should probably still usually be possible to use pictures of the flag with initials underneath in the same picture file (which might still often be an improvement, even though it wouldn't help those wishing to copy an article to a text file or Wordpad). Some of the problems can of course be fixed by leaving your cursor over the flag until the country name appears in a little window, but this is a bit slow, requires the reader to know about and remember this trick, and doesn't fix such problems as flags not copying into text files and Wordpad.

I am reluctant to unilaterally make the change here myself, for fear of being reverted on the pretext that I'm violating some standard that was agreed long ago, etc... Plus it may well prove preferable for somebody to write a program to fix the problem right across Wikipedia.

You are not alone. Look at History of rugby union matches between Australia and New Zealand, where the flags are useless. At least we don't have the problem with the Italian and Irish ones looking the same, but you don't want to know about the issues with getting a representative Ireland one. There is this WP:MOSFLAG, which might be interesting. You can try deleting them and replacing them with the country name. I won't revert you, but I bet someone else will. Thanks for the WP:MOSFLAG link, Aircom. There seems to be all the quotes I need there to protect me from any reverter. My next problem is how to preserve pretty alignments, given that countryname lengths vary - a fix may require sticking everybody in tables, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. I'll probably try to find out how to do this sometime over the next few days, but if you already happen to know how to do this, could you please let me know. In the end I discovered it wasn't too difficult to put them in a table, and I think this fixes the problem, at least for this article, though presumably there's a lot of work to fix all the others. Tlhslobus (talk) 16:26, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
