Miscellaneous

This sounds more like a promotional article than an encyclopedia article. Seriously needs revision. 128.190.62.54 17:33, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. This article totally glosses over all of the controversy surrounding IRRI, such as the fact that they were founded by the US government as a cold war strategy and their Green Revolution technologies were implemented heavy handedly by many US supported dictators and, despite token efforts at a more holistic approach, they continue to have very strong links with agribusiness and have generally promoted industrialization of the Asian food supply. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.69.25.121 (talk) 15:40, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Why don't you post some sources here so readers can be enlightened about this so-called "controversy" surrounding IRRI? --Joe fob —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.127.10.200 (talk) 05:42, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Single source / Press release /copypaste

This article, as well as the 16 articles on CGIAR and its sub entities in the article's infobox, appear to have been copied directly from their websites, and are written like adverts. I've totally rewritten one, but most need to be removed and rewritten for copyvio alone, not to mention the fact that they are all incredibly POV.

If you're looking for a research project, here's a good one. I'm also removing the "start" tag from these articles, as an unreferenced copyvio doesn't meet "start" criteria. T L Miles (talk) 18:05, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

I've added ONE critical reference, from that radical muckraking journal "Agronomy Journal", a publication of the American Society of Agronomy. It should give some hint at just how controversial this organization has been. This article, like all the CGIAR articles, are just press releases from these groups, and I frankly think Wikipedia would be better served by nothing at all than that. That these articles have persisted in this state since 2005 in some cases does not speak well to Wikipedia's abilities to report accurately on complex and controversial subjects that are outside the headlines. T L Miles (talk) 18:11, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
In an effort to polish this article, I moved the above-referenced criticism into a separate Criticisms section. But when I looked at the Agronomy Journal article, it contained no criticisms of IRRI. All it did was present an apparently factual sentence about an IRRI project. Hoping not to upset anyone, but wanting the article to reflect what is in the reference, I deleted it. (I also added an additional reference about the start of the IRRI, and copyedited a sentence or two to make the article conform to the reference.) Lou Sander (talk) 00:40, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
I've just spent some time Googling sources to use in improving this article. There's lots of stuff from the IRRI itself, but almost nothing from anyplace else. What there is tends to be articles from one country or another, praising IRRI for some accomplishment in that country. These are nice, but not really good sources for an encyclopedia. Maybe there are some print references, but I don't know where to start looking for them. Lou Sander (talk) 01:01, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
I've referenced the basic info about IRRI back to the IRRI website and added a few links to organisations that support IRRI's work to cross reference the work IRRI is engaged in. Sophie Clayton (talk) 09:12, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Date of Founding

Editors with names but without user pages persist in changing the founding date and year of this organization. Please stop. It is not your place to change material that is properly sourced. Additionally, this particular source is one of the few not published by IRRI, so it is especially improper to change material that it backs up. --Lou Sander (talk) 03:22, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Noted - I've added some more text as backgroud info from an external reference to clarify the founding dates. Sophie Clayton (talk) 01:33, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Declaring conflict of interest

I have been editting the IRRI wikipedia entry to help provide some references and more information about the organization. I am the Public Relations Manager of IRRI so I have a clear conflict of interest that I want to declare. My edits are all tagged to me so readers can see what changes I have made and dispute or change anything that is unreferenced or looks like propaganda. I will endeavour to keep a neutral point of view in making furture edits, but will welcome input from other editors to keep things so. Sophie Clayton (talk) 04:32, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
