Comment without topic edit

This entry is obviously written by someone who is an anti-abortion advocate. It misrepresents the findings of the conference. It does not define "human rights." This is propaganda masquerading as information. Very poor entry.

This article needs more focus on the empowerment of women aspect of the conference edit

The Wikipedia explanation about this conference focuses largely on abortion, which is but one aspect of the conference debate. The conference in 1994 set up a Programme of Action that recommends to the international community a set of important population and development objectives. Among the goals of the ICPD Programme of Action are the achievement of equality and equity between men and women, and the realization of women's full potential. Towards these ends, the Programme calls upon countries to act in order to empower women and to take steps to promote gender equality in all spheres of life, including the elimination of discrimination against the girl child and the promotion of male participation [1, Chapter IV, pp. 17-21]. In addition, the five-year review of the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action made recommendations for the promotion and protection of women's human rights, the empowerment of women, the incorporation of gender prospectives in programmes and policies, and for active advocacy to promote gender equality and equity {2, Chapter III, pp. 25-36].

The Objectives of the Programme of Action are: (a) To achieve equality and equity based on harmonious partnership between men and women and enable women to realize their full potential; (b) To ensure the enhancement of women's contributions to sustainable development through their full involvement in policy- and decision-making processes at all stages and participation in all aspects of production, employment, income-generating activities, education, health, science and technology, sports, culture and population-related activities and other areas, as active decision makers, participants and beneficiaries; (c) To ensure that all women, as well as men, are provided with the education necessary for them to meet their basic human needs and to exercise their human rights.
