Talk:International Association of Classification Societies

Latest comment: 6 years ago by InternetArchiveBot in topic External links modified

I merged content from the "Iacs" article as it was a duplicate of this article. I am not an expert on classification societies, so additional editing may be necessary. The reference to CRS was ommitted from the "Iacs" article as it appears it is no longer an associate of the IACS.

Perhaps the introductory paragraph merged in from the "Iacs" article may be sufficient to remove the "insufficient context" tag. RadioTheodric (talk) 13:53, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The following content was in the Talk page for Iacs (I did not write it). It seems appropriate to move it here. Perhaps someone can merge this into the main article: RadioTheodric (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

moved from classification society: The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) based in London, UK represents 10 of the most famous societies. IACS was formed by seven leading societies on 11 September 1968. Current members are ABS, BV, CCS, DNV, GL, KR, LR, NK, RINA and RS. The Indian Register Of Shipping is the only remaining associate member, as this grade is being phased out. The Croatian Register of Shipping was an associate member of IACS until the end of 2004, and the associate membership of the Polish Register of Shipping was suspended in 2000.

IACS was given consultative status with International Maritime Organization (IMO), and remains the only non-governmental organisation with observer status which is able to develop and apply rules. The status of the standards developed by member societies was enshrined in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

I entered the location of the foundation of IACS - Hamburg, as well as the location of the actual Headquarters - London. Changed the wording from "formed" to "founded".

Furthermore I do not really understand the meaning of the phrase related to SOLAS. This should be deleted from the article. SOLAS is an International Convention, set forth by IMO and has nothing to do with IACS - except the contribution of IACS as a consultative body. This contribution is not only for SOLAS Convention, but also for ILLC (Load Line Convention) and MARPOL.

The following text, with the official description of IACS functions should be included:

"The functions of IACS include the standardization of the rules for construction and survey, acting in as an advisory capacity to administrations and collaborating as observer with regard to IMO conventions (SOLAS, Load Line and MARPOL), resolutions and codes."
