Talk:Initial mass function

Untitled edit

The IMF exponent seemingly varies, according to galaxy type, from about 1.5 in lower mass galaxies, to nearly 3.0 in massive ellipticals. Popular references, referring to the original journal article:

Add graphs edit

Some plots of the mass functions described would help here. Fig (talk) 12:20, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

So it's 2015 and there's still no graphs here! That's a real shame... Fig (talk) 00:13, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
There. Feel free to make it pretty. --JohannesBuchner (talk) 19:24, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Note that the current plot is actually showing xi(m), not xi(m)*Delta m. Can this be changed?2607:F140:400:A004:9C74:F00E:9779:BFFE (talk) 17:09, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Expand? edit

Is it o'k the article's so compact?
What about - maybe - contriving another section — something about the usage?
NB. Is it ok the 'main' section staying the first while focusing on a rather mathematicised approach if I make ms clear? Josh, linguist (talk) 09:16, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

If you have something to add, feel free to do it. Remember to include sources, now that you probably look at them anyway. I don't get what you say about the order of sections, but that can always be changed, so just go ahead. — HHHIPPO 09:52, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Variation edit

The following "reference" is moved from a section title in the article to here:

This section is added in the hope that it will be useful. Please note that the IMF variation is not a standard practice in the current astrophysics research. The possible intrinsic variation would cost huge trouble for the community. More detailed information and latest research progress are not provided due to the sensitive nature of the issue and a conflict of interest.

It was added by an anonymous editor together with some slightly WP:FRINGE commentary that I'm going to look into in more detail. Lithopsian (talk) 14:21, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
