Inigo Jones As Ancestor edit

The article describes him as a descendant of the architect Inigo Jones. This is impossible, as Inigo Jones never married or left any descendants. EricWR (talk) 03:27, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

@EricWR: There is a couple more generations given in relation on this claim in his Australian Dictionary of Biography entry but not to the extent of presenting an entire family tree back to Inigo Jones's lifetime. ADB is generally regarded as a reliable source and, although unmarried, there's always the possibility that Inigo Jones had illegitimate children. So we do have a source we could cite if we wanted to. I have done family history and I do know that there is often a nugget of truth in some family stories but it's often been a bit twisted through the generations, so it may be that there is a relationship to Inigo Jones but perhaps not a direct descendant. Given when the compulsory registration of births, deaths and marriages etc did not commence until 1837 in England, it may be impossible to unravel this claim due to lack of records in the relevant timeframes. The claim also appears in his obituary but without the necessary detail.Kerry (talk) 23:26, 9 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm starting to think the best way forward is to put in the article. "It has been claimed that Jones is descended from the architect Inigo Jones (with citations), however Inigo Jones never married and there are no records of descendants (can you cite something that says he didn't marry and had no descendants?)." That sounds like a good solution. I believe the biography I read was Inigo: The Life of Inigo Jones, Architect of the English Renaissance (2004) by Michael Leapman but it was several years ago so I'm not sure. I no longer have a copy of it. Any biography could be cited saying he never married. I believe Leapman's book addressed the question of descendants (concluding in the negative) but I don't have a copy at hand to verify it. Whatever the source, while illegitimate children cannot be ruled out definitely, none were ever acknowledged in his lifetime and none ever came forward afterwards.EricWR (talk) 01:25, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@EricWR: Done. If you happen to find that book, please add a citation to it. Thanks Kerry (talk) 03:55, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
