Definition

Most people in Europe are indigenous. They are descended from the first people, so are the indigenous or aboriginal people.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Enzedbrit (talk • contribs) 5 Feb 2006.

Kindly review the indigenous peoples article, to see why and how the term "indigenous peoples" is meant here in a specific and contemporary sense, and hence the majority of European peoples are not so described.--cjllw | TALK 04:34, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Agreed that it would be useful to go into some more detail on the scope/definition of 'indigenous peoples' as it is meant to apply for this article. As it is, this article has barely progressed from the initially-created stub which was split off from the main indigenous peoples article about a year ago now, & so there's much more which could also be expanded upon here. It's more a question of time/priority allocation, and to date it's an unfinished product. Anyone's free to take a crack at it, if they wish.--cjllw | TALK 04:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

The term here Indigenous_peoples#Definitions seems to be defined for human rights reasons. Like, to improve conditions of Native-Americans in USA. However indigenous also means:

adjective originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native. [1]

So I suggest we make this a disambiguation page. One links to original people of Europe, pretty much all current Europeans and the other links to indigenous people in human rights sense...I'll do it soon, seems like not many people care about this page...Thulean 06:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Thulean, true enough this page is relatively little-visited, but that's still no cause to go about making precipitous changes when per discussions you are involved with elsewhere should make it clear there is no consensus to do so.

You say it yourself, the 'other' meaning for this article you would like to see represented here includes "...pretty much all current Europeans", and in which case this other sense would be indistinguishable from "European ethnic groups" or some other title- "indigenous" would be completely redundant. Go ahead and make a page on Ethnic groups of Europe or some such if that is what you want (there probably is already an article or articles covering this already somewhere); but leave this article alone with its intended meaning and title, there would really be no need to prepend the adjective indigenous to the title of the article you seem to be looking for.--cjllw | TALK 01:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

It seems to me that most European peoples are in fact "indigenous" under the standards of the indigenous peoples article.Sylvain1972 19:15, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

I appreciate the "intended meaning and title" of this article, and it is recognized at European_ethnic_groups#.22Indigenous.22_minorities (viz., per Definitions and identity of indigenous peoples), but I nevertheless think it should be merged into European_ethnic_groups#.22Indigenous.22_minorities because as it stands it merely duplicates the scope and content of that section. dab (𒁳) 09:26, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Possibly, I can see the argument for merging. However the article does fit into a 'by continent' series, so equally cld survive on its own as a part of the whole scheme. --cjllw ʘ TALK 10:02, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

yes, I see the point, but I decidedly think it is a bad idea to allow navigation boxes to dictate decisions of content structuring. Let me merge it, and see how you like it. If you think the "indigenous" content is buried in the longer article, you can still revert the merge, making this a WP:SS sub-article of the full "European ethnic groups" one. dab (𒁳) 10:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
