Section: Journeys to the East and later centuries
editThis section is not nearly up to the standard. Could someone with knowledge/time to expand this section have a look? Connor Gilbert 18:06, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm surprised that no one has added any information on how the ancient Indians made use of the Monsoon winds. J. Innes Miller, to mention one source, describes how Indian traders (the precursors of the better known Banians, who also deserve a mention in this article) used it to cross the Indian Ocean in a comparatively short time, giving them the ability to sail ports in Africa and Arabia, trade there, & return all within 8-9 months. It was an amazing resource that made the Indian Ocean arguably more commercially important than the contemporary Mediterranean Sea! -- llywrch (talk) 21:41, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
no mention of Scindia Steam Navigation Co
editThere is no mention of Scindia Steam Navigation Co a pioneer shiping company having great history
more than 60 ship
most of them innograted by great personalties
like MOTILAL MENRU(FATHER OF JAWHARLAL NEHRU(INDIAS FIST PRIME MINISTER))
MOHMAD ALI JONHA - FATHER OF PAKISTAN
AND MONY MORE LIKE THEM
== April 5 marks the National Maritime Day of India. On this day in 1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty, the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, journeyed to the United Kingdom. The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 5th April, 1964. ==
NOW I THINK ITS IMPORTANT
Ship coinage
editHere's a example of a two-masted Indian ship on lead coin of Vasisthiputra Sri Pulamavi, testimony to the seafaring and trading capabilities of the Satavahanas during the 1st-2nd century CE. Feel free to insert it in the article. PHG (talk) 15:09, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Text boxes...
editHello there - just looking through the article I notice that there are a number of large text boxes containing slabs of quoted information. While I appreciate we are all have limits on the time we can spend on wikipedia and that perhaps large slabs of quotes are better than nothing, it would be good if the key points of the quotations could be pulled out and merged into the general prose. I, however, am not able to do it at this moment - perhaps later I might have the time, but would be very happy to see someone else do it in the meantime. cheers --Merbabu (talk) 02:56, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Pliny quotations on India trade
editAs far as I know, Pliny mentions trade with India valued 550 million sesterces/year (Pliny, NH, 6, 26, 6) and 100 million sesterces/year (Pliny, NH, 12, 41, 2). Would anybody have other similar quotations? Anyway, the mentioned "one million" is too low. Artreve (talk) 17:15, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
