Talk:Independent Olympic Participants at the 2014 Winter Olympics

Name of article edit

Are we sure Indian athletes will be listed as "Independent Olympic Athletes?" For the 2012 Olympics there was a lot of confusion and some articles have used the term Individual Olympic Athletes and Independent Olympic Participants, some have used them interchangeably. The result of the discussion in 2012 was to use the term "athletes" and that is the word in use in the cited sources, so it seems preferable. However the official sochi site still has india listed as an olympic nation so there is no real help there.18abruce (talk) 15:06, 9 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
It now says "Independent Olympic Participants." [1] The consens consensus was to use whatever name they use during those particular Games, which has varied. See Independent Olympic Participants at the 1992 Summer Olympics and Individual Olympic Athletes at the 2000 Summer Olympics. That being said, we have varying sources so it wouldn't hurt to wait until the opening ceremony tomorrow and see how they're announced. We should use that name, whatever it is. Update - CBC also lists "Independent Olympic Participants." See [2]. I don't know if we have enough to support moving the page now, but if they march as "Independent Olympic Participants" tomorrow we should move the page. Smartyllama (talk) 16:44, 6 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
CBC also has video of Shiva Keshavan's training run that lists his IOC code as "IOP". See [3]. From what I understand there is one source video provided to all countries for broadcast but I'm not sure if that includes that graphic.Casinote (talk) 15:05, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
They were announced as "Independent Olympic Participants." It was projected onto the Stadium floor. I think at this point we should move the page. Smartyllama (talk) 18:20, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Note: current title in the above proposal altered to lowercase "participants" to fix request after interim page move described below. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 06:31, 15 February 2022 (UTC) Restored. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 23:38, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Leaning oppose. It looks like the vast majority of the athletes competed as Independent Olympic Participants. I am not seeing a reason for change, but I can be swayed. Mannysoloway (talk) 13:23, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Comment No, only Shiva Keshavan competed as an independent athlete. The two others (Himanshu Thakur and Nadeem Iqbal) officially competed under the Indian flag. See the official records from Olympic.com, Keshavan is still listed as an IOP athlete, while the other two are listed to have competed for India (IND)Hariboneagle927 (talk) 14:08, 9 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. They marshed in as IOP at the OC. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 01:21, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per Sportsfan 1234. And I apologize I moved the article to lowercase participants before seeing that an RM was pending. Dicklyon (talk) 05:04, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
