POV

There wasnt any Brazilian war of independence. greatly biased info. Brazil became independent because the king feared that the Spanish American wars could infect the Portuguese colony, so his son declared the independence of Brazil, but who ordered it was the king of Portugal himself. -Pedro 01:01, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Even though there wasn't a war before independence declaration, it's historically clear that some provinces, like Maranhão, Piauí and Pará, resisted against D. Pedro I, the Emperor of Brazil and former Regent under D. João VI term in Portugal. It take several months 'till the whole country was pacified and united under the new governmnet. The version of the Portugal's king supposed order to his son declares independence is not supported by an expressive number of historicist. I suggest clarification on the issue. Calling it a war is misleading. There were unrests and insurgencies. An independence war suggests there was a conflict between Brazil and Portugal, which is not the case. I personally suggest this article be called simply Brazilian Independence. The talk page of the article from the Brazilian Empire suggests that should be divided in smaller articles, this one might be used as a start. Also, historians widely accept and believe the brazilian independence was plotted by Portugal, citing evidences such as Portugal's foreign debt owed to England transferred to Brazil, among others, so your claim is completely false. I support the move to the title Brazilian Independence, as there wasn't really a war over this, but only when someone can provide more context for the independence as a whole — not just the resistance there was. I agree with changing the title to Brazilian Independence. And on a side note, I don't think there's any evidence that João told Pedro to take the crown for himself if looked as though Brazil would revolt, although this is the story that is traditionally told. Monikwee 21:19, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Although I can't provide any links to it, I've seen historians at the University of Sao Paulo say there is evidence in a letter from John to Pedro which would say "Lança mão da coroa antes que outro o faça", "take the crown before somebody else does". Also, it is said the Freemasonry publicized a letter of independence.

I've moved the contents of the "Brazilian War of Independence" page to the "Brazilian Declaration of Independence" page.

I've checked the subject in five different Brazilian History books, all of which make no mention to such war. On the flip side, I didn't see any of the proponents of the "war page" come up with reliable material for references. If anybody wishes to extend the debate, I will bother mentioning each source I checked. In short, although there were local conflicts in certain Provinces, the History books never use the expression "Guerra da Independência" (War of Independence) or any equivalent term. Local revolts and minor confrontations do not add up to a war.

I have preserved the original text, save for minor adaptations in the lead.

Well, I don't know if someone cares about this article, but even so I will let in here comments about my modifications in it. I've started to improve it.
