Independence Day (Sri Lanka)National Day of Sri Lanka – Clause 8 of Sri Lanka Constitution says "The National Day of the Republic of Sri Lanka shall be the fourth day of February." not Independence Day. 113.59.209.228 (talk) 04:57, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose It just official name of the day. Please provide reliable source (need to be secondary source) to prove "National Day of Sri Lanka" is the common name. Matthew hk (talk) 02:35, 27 January 2019 (UTC) (edited 03:57, 30 January 2019 (UTC))Reply

It is an article that asking people to use National Day instead of Independence Day, but did not prove National Day is more common than Independence Day. Matthew hk (talk) 03:52, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I did not have rights to move an article if the move is controversial. The point to start a WP:RM is seeking consensus, and people should respect the process and the discussion outcome . Matthew hk (talk) 04:52, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Agree I'm from Sri Lanka. As my knowledge many Sri Lankans called it as National Day but few people called it as Independence Day. In old days "Independence Day" is the popular name but now "National Day" is the popular name. --43.250.243.224 (talk) 20:02, 30 January 2019 (UTC) 43.250.243.224 (talk) has made few or no other edits outside this topic. • Comment Five anonymous IPs (two on the same IPv6 network) suddenly post support for the proposal in a span of just 40 minutes. On a page with less than 30 watchers. Right.   —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:55, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Comment - would appear to either be sockpuppets or meatpuppets - which is a shame as this is a worthwhile discussion to be had. Firstly if there was a successful change it should be to National Day (Sri Lanka) instead of National Day of Sri Lanka as per our standard naming conventions. Secondly there does appear to be a case to argue that the common usage has changed to National Day rather than Independence Day. Will seek some input from some of the active Sri Lankan editors, which should give balance to the discussion (or at least more independent views) - @Blackknight12:, @Obi2canibe:, @AntanO:, @L Manju:, @Rehman:, @ChamithN:, @Price Zero:, @Gihan Jayaweera:, @Indunil Chamara:. Based on Google hit count Independence Day of Sri Lanka (149,000) vs. National Day of Sri Lanka (109,000), I don't see much of a difference. If there are official efforts to change the term used, I don't see a serious issue against going ahead with the rename (as per Dan) due to the similar number of uses. But this is only based on the search results; I am not aware of what is really used publicly. Perhaps we could keep an eye on the bilboards/etc that will be up next week. There is an unofficial announcement that Sri Lanka changes the term Indipendance Day to National Day from 2020. It was first discussed in public media by Vajira Abeywardena, Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government.[1] Several days later, Mano Ganeshan, Minister of National Integration, Official Languages, Social Progress and Hindu Religious Affairs declared there is no need of such a change on 26th of January, 2019.[2] Therefore, there is no need of changing the wiki page name until an official declaration. Yes, at the moment, I think Independence Day is used more commonly by the natives, even in most official contexts. And right now, the only confirmation we have is the Google hit count Rehman linked above, which is better than nothing. I do not see the necessity for this move, unless there's a better source than the Google hit count, which back ups the claim that National Day is used more commonly than Independence Day. Basically, just follow what WP:COMMONNAME says: Although official, scientific, birth, original, or trademarked names are often used for article titles, the term or name most typically used in reliable sources is generally preferred.-- ChamithN (talk) 10:25, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Independence Day edit

National Day, also known as Independence Day,[1] is a Sri Lankan national holiday celebrated annually on 4 February to commemorate the country’s political independence from British rule in 1948. It is celebrated all over the country through a flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. Usually, the main celebration takes place in Colombo, where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech. 203.189.186.229 (talk) 08:42, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
