Capitalization

edit

Should the first letter in imum coeli be capitalized? I don't know much about Latin terms, but it doesn't seem like a proper noun. Sam 00:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes. Same as Midheaven or Medium Coeli. NaySay 03:18, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nadir

edit

Although the terms are still sometimes confused, the nadiris actually not the same thing as the Imum Coeli. The IC is the place where the ecliptic crosses the meridian on the other side of the earth from where you are, opposite the Midheaven. It is part of the ecliptic system. The nadir, which is part of the horizon system, is the place that is directly below your feet, under the earth. It is opposite the zenith, which is the place which is directly over your head. In other words, both the prime vertical (which goes through the pole of the horizon, as well as the east and west points) and the meridian go through the zenith and the nadir. As I'm sure you realize, because of the 23 degree angle of the ecliptic to the equator, the Midheaven and the IC are never overhead or under your feet in areas outside of the tropics. Even in the tropics, the midheaven is only overhead two days each year: at the Equator, for example, on the first days of spring and of fall; at the Tropic of Cancer, the first day of summer; at the Tropic of Capricorn, the first day of winter. Here in the temperate northern regions, the culminating Sun is always quite a bit south of directly overhead--hence the Midheaven and the IC are as well. NaySay 06:14, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Constistency

edit

Since this article is about Imum Coeli, I would suggest to refer to Medium Coeli instead of Midheaven. If there is a need for clarification then add a separate note about other names for both.Zigomar7 (talk) 11:45, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Agreed with note on the article about citations. This article definitely needs citations about the origin, history, use and current applications of Imum Coeli. Whiteguru (talk) 01:25, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
