article overlap

This article and 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic and climate change seem to cover similar content. Schazjmd (talk) 19:03, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

@Schazjmd: Ack! Wish I had come across that one before creating this. In my defense, I did look, but as it appears that article is an orphan, it would have been very difficult to find. The two will definitely have to be merged. As to where/how, I think mine is at the better title ("environment" allows for broader discussion than "climate", and the "impact of the..." format is consistent with sibling articles). And while that article is further developed, the one here is "cleaner", since its material comes from the main pandemic article where more attention has been paid to scrubbing excessive details. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:18, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
Sdkb, I agree with your assessment. I was pretty sure you didn't know about the other article, it's pretty recent itself and I believe is an edu editor's project, but I think it'll serve readers best to combine the efforts into a single, solid article. Schazjmd (talk) 23:31, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
(adding)I mentioned this article on the other's Talk page as well, to make them aware. Schazjmd (talk) 23:33, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Merger and long-term split

I'm not opposing the merge - most material seems to have been retained - but once there's enough material, it will make sense to re-split into impacts on pollution vs impacts on human-induced global warming: these overlap, but they're not the same topic. (The initial version of the global warming article had more material on pollution than global warming, which would have made it hard to oppose a merge.) In terms of effects on humans and civilisation, pollution statistically gives us more cancer, lung disease, shorter life spans, for example, but global warming is disrupting the whole ecosystem and biosphere much more dramatically. This is just a comment/prediction - until the sourced material is ready, a split would be premature. Boud (talk) 01:47, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

@Boud: agreed. We can deal with that issue when the time comes, but it seems a ways away currently. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:59, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Rebound/recovery effects in China

A research article was published recently on reduction of NOx anthropogenic emissions and the subsequent recovery in East China. Would this be relevant for this page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FB60:1011:2006:FD15:D616:D1AF:EB8C (talk) 22:08, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Yes, 100%! If you have knowledge in this area, please be bold and add to the article. I added the study as a reference; you can add it to anything you add by inserting the code <ref name="MDPI"/>. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 05:25, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

I have something to write about the situation in India and I had also written it but you removed it Prolver1 (talk) 13:01, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Improvements

I want to ask you that why did you removed my contribution. I had added some important points which is true so i don't think that you have any to remove my contribution. Please answer Prolver1 (talk) 12:58, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Lives saved

@Sdkb: You need sources that pass the standard described at WP:MEDRS, such as peer-reviewed review articles. Even primary articles in scientific journals do not qualify. In this particular case I highly doubt that sufficient sourcing exists to include such a strong claim. Sunrise (talk) 05:30, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Looking at Wikipedia:Biomedical information, I'm not sure information on pollution falls under the MEDRS banner, since it's not going to influence people in ways that could have medical consequences. I'm comfortable with the text in the article, given that it has in-text attribution. For reference for others, we're talking about which one Earth systems scientist estimated may have saved at least 77,000 lives over two months., which is sourced to [1] and [2]. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 06:09, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
Number of lives lost (or saved) due to secondary effects of a pandemic is inherently biomedical information. In addition, pollution is an environmental factor with important effects on human health. This situation falls under both "Health effects" and "Population data" from WP:BIOMEDICAL.
This type of information most certainly can have medical consequences – it affects how seriously the situation is perceived, and therefore influences how people act, both at the individual level and at the level of decision-making in government. Attribution really has no effect on this; if the source doesn't pass MEDRS, then it is considered unreliable for this information. Sunrise (talk) 04:23, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
(Added in response to an additional revert) I'm not going to edit war with you over this, but BURDEN applies to MEDRS in the same way that it applies to RS, with the only difference being the standard of reliability being applied. Regardless, when the possibility of harm is in dispute, I would argue that it's common sense to leave the information out until the issue is resolved. After all, that’s a major part of why MEDRS (and BLP, for that matter) exists in the first place. You can't just respond by asserting that harm will not occur, as in your ES, without justifying it (and the summary even comes across as implying that you don't plan to justify it either). Seismic activity lowered

NYTimes and Science News reporting today on up to 50% drop in human-produced seismic noise, if anyone wants to incorporate it into the article. Schazjmd (talk) 21:29, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Psychology and risk perception

In this section, should we mention that this natural zoonotic infection has heightened awareness of bioweapons? Here is a possible reference. Charles Juvon (talk) 02:42, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

I would say that this may be a good idea but not here as this page is about impacts on the environment. The page you may be looking for for adding such info is pandemic prevention. I already included some info about this increased awareness in section "Biotechnology research and development regulation" but that is certainly worth improving (and updating) – you may even change the section title or create a new section there if appropriate.--Prototyperspective (talk) 10:49, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Warming

I've noticed this entry here that seemed problematic (suboptimal sources including a retracted one and dubious conclusions). This article has mostly the same, only has one differing source and also makes strange claims. Warming keeps up every year and it was anticipated that emission reductions due to the pandemic would not be important enough to effect cooling, but perhaps to slightly slow down warming. However, the claim that I see here is that reductions have contributed to more warming, rather than slower warming (with the "warming instead of cooling" potentially misleading). I added relevant tags for now, —PaleoNeonate – 21:48, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Adding: I'd have to more throughly assess the paper, but this would not be about greenhouse but instead related to aerosols and cloud sun-blocking effects... Likely not today, but I think it's possible to preserve and clarify, potentially also using more secondary sources. —PaleoNeonate – 22:07, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
