Conflict of interest

edit

Hello Ehmg, it appears that your account is a WP:SPA. If you have any connection to Iman Maghsoudi then you should disclose that conflict of interest here on the talk page. TipsyElephant (talk) 15:15, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi TipsyElephant, I don't do much on Wikipedia (one reason being the strict moderation. I understand that it's necessary, but I personally don't have the time to deal with all the nuances and details). This guy shares the same last name as me, as well as being an Iranian, and I found out about him when researching my own name. Thought he deserved a page, being a fellow Iranian. I even reached out to him so he would email permissions for his photos (still working on this one). He is also well known when searched in Persian (ایمان مقصودی). I'd appreciate if you'd judge the content of the page based on his merits and qualifications. And I also appreciate the time and energy you guys are spending here, I really do. This experience was very refreshing for me, and I may even spend more time on editing Iranian related articles (I'm a certified English-Persian Translator). Ehmg (talk) 04:07, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ehmg: thank you for responding and for being so responsive. I often come across drafts that have been declined and commented on multiple times with no corrections made to the draft and it's refreshing to see a new user quickly making adjustments requested by reviewers. I'll take a more thorough look at this draft today and maybe we can get it published to mainspace or I can at least give you more tips for getting it published. Thank you for your help and comments. Wikipedia is one of the main tools I use in my work, and I've been using it for more than 10 years. I immensely respect the editors and creators who put so much time and effort in it. Ehmg (talk) 03:40, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

Hello Ehmg, I've gone through the sources and they appear to be lacking significant coverage of Iman Maghsoudi. Personally, I would decline the draft again for not passing the requirements laid out at WP:BIO. I would recommend reading WP:GOLDENRULE for a better idea of what types of sources reviewers will be looking for. TipsyElephant (talk) 16:53, 6 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, first of all, thank you so much for the time you spent here. This method is much faster in learning how to publish and edit Wikipedia articles. I learn new things from you and the sources and arguments you mention every time. The tutorials are very inadequate and boring. May be this is the reason why new editors get discouraged so often? Anyway, there are several points I would like you to consider. I'd welcome any counter arguments.
1) He is a designers, articles tend to talk more about his work or show them, rather than talk about him or cover him. You don't find people talk about designers, but they do talk about their products. A designer that works in concepts is even less covered, while his work may inspire others, it's more of a professional thing rather than a popular one. And it won't generate much views and clicks, so the baseline is pretty much low, comparatively.
2) Continuing from my point 1, there are very few websites that specifically cover industrial design news, and few other sources tend to cover them. A niche subject does not create much revenue, so they don't put much effort into them. Yanko Design, Designer Daily and New Design are pretty much the only websites I found that professionally cover industrial design. Compared to other more popular fields of visual arts, or music and film industry, designers are very under reported IMO. You won't find any design related awards that are covered as much as other forms of arts, and this guy almost won every design award that mattered in his field of work. Here you can see he's ranked first in luxury design in "the world": https://www.designclassifications.com/design-category.php?classification=83 and Exxeo among the best designs in America (http://bestdesignamerica.com/), but you don't see the coverage proportionate to these.
3) Most of sources that cover Iman Maghsoudi in more details are in Persian language, as he spent most of his career in Iran before immigrating to use as an Alien of Extraordinary Ability (found this in Persian sources). I didn't use them much because non-native editors may find them confusing. e.g. for ISNA (https://www.isna.ir/news/91102514479/) you said the article barely mentions Maghsoudi, while right in the beginning there is a photo of him speaking and before and following there are several paragraphs of him talking about the project. If you used google translate, it's woefully inaccurate in translating websites from Persian to English. If you give it the text only, you'd get better results for this language.
I can go over the sources point by point in the table with you, but I don't know to do it without messing it up. Any tips? Ehmg (talk) 04:23, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ehmg: it's possible that Maghsoudi passes a subject-specific notability guideline such as WP:CREATIVE, but generally even those lean back on having some level of significant coverage. People and the things they create are separate entities and their notability is evaluated separately (notability is not inherited). For instance, The Beatles and Hey Jude are independently notable but not every song by The Beatles meets Wikipedia's notability requirements simply because of the song's association with The Beatles. Similarly, Maghsoudi and his Exxeo Piano are separate entities. Both could be notable, neither could be notable, or one of the two might be notable. However, their notability is not based on their association with other. Awards are definitely helpful in establishing notability (see WP:ANYBIO), but significant coverage is typically the biggest determining factor. It's also worth noting that awards carry more weight if the award's notability can be established. For instance, the Grammy Awards carry much more weight than the Interior Motives Award because the Grammy Awards has a Wikipedia page and the awards notability has been clearly established. Non-English sources are allowed and if there is significant coverage of this person in Persian language sources I would encourage you to cite those sources. You're correct about the ISNA source, I was skimming the sources and used CTRL-F to find his name but his name is translated differently. I'll take a more thorough look at the non-English sources when I get a chance. TipsyElephant (talk) 14:38, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
As far as design and industrial designs are concerned, the awards won by Maghosudi are among the most notable. Again it's not as famous as Grammys, but they are well established within their own niche. International Design Excellence Award (IDEA), Red-Dot and A' Design are the Grammy and Oscars of the design world https://designwanted.com/10-product-design-awards/ , all of which Maghsoudi has won.
I will provide more Persian Sources here, if you think they are ok, I will add them to the bio. I will provide an explanation of what each link talks about.
These are about his Python project in Iran (coverage and interviews). I've used sources that are reliable in Persian Language. As with English, there are few that professionally or generally cover design news.

@Ehmg: I've accepted the draft because I think that the awards and the sources you've provided are enough to provide borderline notability. If someone else takes a look at the page and thinks that it doesn't pass WP:N then they'll open a WP:PROD in which case you can simply remove the prod tag. If they still believe it is not notable they may open an WP:AFD where multiple editors will discuss the page's notability and come to a WP:CONSENSUS as to what should be done with the page. There were some issues with the page being promotional so keep in mind that if you add more promotional content to the page someone could potentially nominate the page for speedy deletion under WP:G11 which you can contest and potentially fix the problem by re-writing some of the prose. If you want further assistance with the page I would recommend leaving a comment at WT:IRAN or contact someone on the WikiProject's member list: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Iran/Members. You could also find other editors who can read Persian by checking who has the Category:User fa userbox on their user page. And of course feel free to ask questions at WP:TEA for a newcomer friendly environment or WP:HELPDESK if you've got a more advanced question. Happy editing, and good luck!
