The holly is continuous pure stands of hollies that grow labyrinth of vaults in which they take refuge Thrushs, and deers.

This doesn't look right.--Øln (talk) 17:16, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edit required edit

This article includes a large amount of interesting but unsourced material that may have been inexpertly translated from another language. It includes repetitions and internal contradictions. I've done a light copyedit on the Overview, but the article really needs expert attention. Frans Fowler (talk) 08:14, 27 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ecology edit

I stumbled over these unref'd sentences (not from me): "Holly is a rugged pioneer species that preserves and enriches the soil facilitating colonization by others. It is an ecological indicator of a well-preserved or recovering area with little human intrusion." I don't know a good ref either, but i endorse this. It's even clear from the physiognomic traits and ecology. For example, I.A. spreads even under grazing animals (including cattle) and thus, claims ground areas that won't be 'disturbed' anymore. It accumulates leaves which apparently build up good humus.

A related point of interest is about I.A. growing in dense understory flocks in "lighter" forest types (like oak woods) shading out tree seedlings. It is reproducing both from seed and clonal, all the time. Why should it ever fade away, freeing ground for other trees seedlings - if not for a forest fire ? In the absence of fire, it could potentially displace oaks, and even beeches. (I'm watching Ilex in Germany for more than 30 years now.) --Rosetta 2016-12-28 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.134.148.207 (talk) 00:43, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
