I verified the info in the article, though I didn't get a chance to put in direct citations. However, I've checked it out, so I removed the tag. Jlove1982 22:48, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

V/s?

What's V/s mean?

Mike Schiraldi 02:12, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

V/s is like the H.M.S. and U.S.S. codes, it stands for ,,varðskip‘‘ (guard ship, coastal defence ship) and is used for cannon armed Icelandic Coast Guard vessels. - 130.208.165.5 18:42, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
How about M/s and TF? Post answers at Ship prefix - Mike Schiraldi 17:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Military

Since when does Iceland have a military? Isn't more right to say "defence system" or something? Iceland does not have a military, thus the Icelandic Coast Guard cannot be part of it!

Danielst 09:25, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually it does, the Coast guard is the main part of it, and the crisis response unit and air defense system make up the rest of the Icelandic military

Iceland does have a military. The CRU is a de facto army and the coast guard is armed and is not part of a police or civilian force, thus making it a military It's sort of like Japan: The politicians like to deny it, but in reality they just get around not having an army or navy by calling them something else -ANK —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.129.247 (talk) 20:20, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

New article on TF-SIF

I have drafted an article on TF-SIF since it is currently being used for observations of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption. It is loosely based on the Icelandic Wikipedia stub. Needs a photograph of the plane. Any comments - on my Talk page, please.--Lidos (talk) 08:21, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Introduction changes

Having looked at the article on the Cod Wars and checked refs one para of the infro seems to be at odds with the information. The part describing coastguard vessels as cutting nets to prevent overfishing fails to point out that the reason for the dispute was an icelandic extension of territorial waters to an eventual 200 miles, not primarily concerns with overfishing. Any objections to changing? Kurtk60 (talk) 00:23, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Those concerns overlap. Extension of the territorial waters and later EEZ were concerned with maintaining fish stocks so that the Icelandic economy could sustain itself in the future.-130.208.165.5 (talk) 00:49, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
I do though admit that the introduction could be mended quite a bit.-130.208.165.5 (talk) 00:50, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

infobox to be used

I strongly suggest to replace infobox on the article from military unit infobox to law enforcement agency infobox for the following reason:

  1. Iceland don't have standing army / military as stated here
  2. Iceland have defense agreement with other countries (such as Norway: In 2007, the two countries signed a defence agreement, covering surveillance and military defense of Icelandic air space and economic zone. It means that Norwegian jet fighters and surveillance aircraft will be patrolling Icelandic air space)
  3. Home website of Iceland Coast Guard clearly states that they are Law Enforcement Agency (here).
  4. Act on the Icelandic Coast Guard didn't said anything about its obligation on defense (here)
  5. law enforcement agency infobox have more parameter that can be filled such as jurisdictional structure

I agree that the law enforcement agency infobox should be used. The ICG does have some defence aspects as it is the agency responsible for interacting with NATO-allied militaries but its day to day operations are mostly about maritime law enforcement and SAR. --Bjarki (talk) 13:27, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Agreed with Bjarki, it may be a militarized force regarding its history and the country's NATO membership, but not a 'military' force.--Darius (talk) 14:12, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Bjarki pretty much sums this up. Agree with the use of law enforcement agency infobox. Alvaldi (talk) 19:53, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Bjarki, Darius, Alvaldi Thank you for your input, I believe the consensus is made then. We will keep using law enforcement agency infobox then. Cheers. Ckfasdf (talk) 23:25, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
