Svenonius was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland.[1] Both of his parents hold doctorates in philosophy: his father, Professor Lars Svenonius, teaches symbolic logic and medieval philosophy at the University of Maryland. His mother, Diane Svenonius, works for the United States Department of Labor.[2] Svenonius has three brothers, including Peter Svenonius, Professor of Linguistics at University of Tromsø, and Tim Svenonius, an artist based out of San Francisco, California.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).

He studied fine art at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.[2] Svenonius is also a vegan.[3]
