INXS haven't disbanded!

Why is this article written as though INXS have broken up?

They said they're no longer touring, that is NOT the same as disbanding!

From the official INXS website:

INXS are presently focusing on a forthcoming TV, film and songwriting projects to be released during 2013.

Perth or Sydney

The bands origin is listed in two different places. INXS-Girl 17:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

They are widely credited as coming from Perth in Perth media. This interview[1] seems to directly confirm it. --76.171.36.251 03:49, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Perth media would say that, but it doesn't make it true. The Farris Brothers formed in Sydney 1977. They moved to WA for 10 months in '78 while waiting for Jon Farriss' to be old enough to leave home and playing gigs in country WA, and then returned to Sydney in '79 when they became INXS. From then on, the band seems to have had little to do with Perth other than the odd tour (I do remember one specific occasion of seeing them play here in about 1980). So I think its stretching the truth to say the band is from Perth. I'm adjusting the article accordingly. Moondyne 06:54, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

The band themselves attribute Perth as their origin, as stated at their last concert that Perth was a fitting place to play their last gig because that was where it all started. Further the first gig they played with Jon Farriss on drums (and hence their full usual line up) was in Perth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.69.13.112 (talk) 11:31, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Inxs-kick.jpg

Image:Inxs-kick.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Proposed major editing

B-class? Not according to criteria at WP:BCLASS. All six criteria must be met for assessment as a B-class article.

Specific problems that I see are:
1. The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations where necessary.

It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited. The use of citation templates such as {{cite web}} is not required, but the use of <ref></ref> tags is encouraged.
    • Too many claims/controversial statements have no reliable references, this is especially true for the second part of the 1980s section, all of the 1990s and the Transitional Years sections which have NO references whatsoever. The Rock Star: INXS section has one reference, presumably covering the entire second paragraph and not just its last sentence. Other major claims/controversies are left without references. Instead of planting a citation needed or references needed 'plates for these: I'm going to have a go at finding references but this takes time.

2. The article reasonably covers the topic, and does not contain obvious omissions or inaccuracies.

It contains a large proportion of the material necessary for an A-Class article, although some sections may need expansion, and some less important topics may be missing.
    • Needs a members section (in article not just the list in Infobox) with instrumentation and span of time with band, probably arranged alphabetically for original six. Needs an awards section.

3. The article has a defined structure.

Content should be organized into groups of related material, including a lead section and all the sections that can reasonably be included in an article of its kind.
    • I've already indicated on the 'To do' list above that the article requires a Lead and although there's been some expansion in recent days the beefing up needs to go a long way to adequately summarise an article of this length: probably three or four paragraphs. I believe the article fails B-class on this criterion alone. Instead of downgrading the assessment of this article, I've decided to try to improve its Lead (and other fixes as described).

4. The article is reasonably well written.

The prose contains no major grammatical errors and flows sensibly, but it certainly need not be "brilliant". The Manual of Style need not be followed rigorously.
    • Some short/one sentence paragraphs need combining with others nearby or expansion. Some sections need re-editing. There are some music style issues e.g. inclusion of punctuation into track titles: "New Sensation," vs "New Sensation",. Discography section probably a bit deep since there's a direction to separate discography article and a comprehensive band Navbox below, so it should only give studio albums. External links: should be minimal - currently some 25 or so.

5. The article contains supporting materials where appropriate.

Illustrations are encouraged, though not required. Diagrams and an infobox etc. should be included where they are relevant and useful to the content.
    • A legal photo of the Hutchence-led band would assist here but would not prevent B-classification.

6. The article presents its content in an appropriately accessible way.

It is written with as broad an audience in mind as possible. Although Wikipedia is more than just a general encyclopedia, the article should not assume unnecessary technical background and technical terms should be explained or avoided where possible.
    • Some slight issues here e.g. RIAA, for Australian readers, needs spelling out.

Summary: I have significant issues with the current Lead section, lack of members section, lack of awards section, poor referencing (in some sections) and other fixes that are required (as indicated above). I propose to make these changes but it will take about a week before I have finished all this major editing and interim edits may look unfinished or disorganised. Some claims that are not substantiated by independent/reliable sources may be deleted.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 23:26, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

lead section

Shaidar asked me to explain my changes to the lead. A few days ago the lead was one sentence, clearly too short, not meeting GA/B-class requirements and not very useful. I had expanded it a bit with a news style summary of the rest of the article. Some more expansion then happened, including a listing of singles and some other details from the early career of the band. I moved it back somewhat to a more news-style approach, leaving out the name of the band's first single (which is not a particularly notable fact) and the list of singles which hit the Austailian top 5. (*Every* album and most singles are noted in the body of the article, which also contains a brief discography and a link to the full discography. There is no reason to also list a bunch of singles in the lead, and since the band had worldwide success the Austrialian chart positions aren't particularly pertinent. There isn't really one single or album universally associated with the band that would bear specific mention in the head, but I have no problem with mentioning a single or two there as examples of where their highest success occurred, or where turning points occurred, if we can find a consensus on which ones). As to where we mention the death of Hutchence, I was more trying to improve flow and readability than make any judgement of importance. Right now the most problematic area of the lead is the last pargraph on awards, which again just restates details given later without a summary statement. I may take a crack at that next. Jgm (talk) 19:15, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Notable singles/albums

My rationale for including the names of singles/albums in the Lead section is to support the casual reader who may remember the name INXS but requires a prompt for some of their songs/albums: they may not read further into the article. It is my belief that the Lead should be able to stand-alone as a summary of the entire article.

Rather than list Australia's top 5 singles and #1 albums as I had previously (I was going to include international successes in a later edit), I can go along with samples of their 'internationally successful' ones only. First consider their #1 singles/albums in AUS, US Hot 100/200 or UK markets, I don't know world-wide sales for all these but according to INXS discography and Kent Music Report/ARIA Charts they would be:

  1. Singles: "Original Sin" (also #1 FRA) and "Need You Tonight" (also #1 CAN)
  2. Albums: The Swing, Listen Like Thieves (note INXS discography article incorrectly lists its AUS peak as #3: it reached #1 for two weeks according to KMR), Kick, X and Welcome to Wherever You Are.

I was investigating allmusic for the Billboard peak positions for INXS singles and albums. All these albums are RIAA: Platinum (or multi) according to INXS discography: I don't have a reliable reference for these certifications yet.

Other high charting US singles are "Devil Inside" and "New Sensation", another CAN #1 is "Pretty Vegas".

Hence, I propose changing the second paragraph from

INXS achieved international success with a series of hit albums and singles through the 1980s and 1990s. The band's fortunes were dealt a blow when Hutchence died in 1997.

to

INXS achieved international success with a series of hit singles and albums through the 1980s and 1990s, including "Original Sin", "Need You Tonight", "Devil Inside" and "New Sensation", and The Swing, Listen Like Thieves, Kick, X and Welcome to Wherever You Are. The band's fortunes were dealt a blow when Hutchence died in 1997.

The last sentence now seems anomalous in this paragraph.

"Pretty Vegas" can be added to the last paragraph where J. D. Fortune is mentioned. If Switch has world-wide sales of one million then it could be mentioned there too (CAN #2).

Any other suggestions?Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 20:25, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

"Original Sin" non-US, non-AUS charting

I've found a problem with the following paragraph in the 1980s section of the article dealing with "Original Sin":

During that year the song was #1 in Australia (for two weeks at the start of 1984)[1] as well as in Argentina and France, #11 in Canada, #23 in Switzerland, #31 in the Netherlands and #58 in the U.S.[2][3]

The Kent report (currently ref #14 in article, #1 here) verifies AUS #1, the AMG Singles (ref #19/#3) verifies US #58, but the other ref (#23/#2) does not support positions claimed. Particularly important is the claim of #1 in France and Argentina, #11 in Canada. The other peak positions are not particularly notable although appearance on these international charts is. I will continue researching for these.

Just noticed ref #2 above supports Swiss charts. However the following reference would be better for Swiss chart performances.[1]

I found the FRA charts portal[1] but it has no info on "Original Sin", first INXS single there is "Need You Tonight" at #10 in 1988. Article also states that first single, "Simple Simon" was released in FRA but I haven't found a ref for this either.

Found ref(s) for ARG/FRA #1 but may not be reliable. Consider Official website bio by year for 1984 and a mirror at Take 40. For chart positions, I'd prefer an independent source but I'd like another opinion. Same ref supports FRA release of "Simple Simon".Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 10:25, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

External links to be greatly reduced

I intend removing most of the External links from the article per WP:MUSTARD and WP:LINKS. For interest sake, I will first list all External links here:

      Official sites

      Database entries

      Fan sites

      External links deletions discussion

      I intend deleting:

      1. All 'Official sites' except the first.
      2. Two imdb sites (for individual members) and discogs from 'Databse entries'. However I will add Australian Rock Database entry which is used in the article as reference for band members, producers, labels, and album names/years of release.
      3. All 'Fan sites'.
      4. Sub-Headings.

I will make these deletions to the article's External links section in two days from this notice.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 00:56, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

It seems another editor, User:Wiki libs (talk | contribs) on 11:08, 22 November 2008 and 11:09, 22 November 2008 has deleted all the External links except the first 'Official site'. I intend returning the imdb entry for INXS and the MusicBrainz discography as well as adding the Australian Rock Database (ARDb) entry indicated above.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 21:38, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I've returned MusicBrainz and IMDb links, and also added ARDb and Allmusic entries. Article now has five External links.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 22:47, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
There is something broken in the format of the link template. If it is added all the categories, interwikis and the navbox disappear. Also the two new links are useless and add nothing we can't already find in the article. They can be used as an inline citation... but serve no encyclopedic no purpose in the el section... just free advertising for the websites is all they were doing there. The Real Libs-speak politely 23:01, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
      Two separate issues here:
      1. 'something broken', I don't see any such problem: all CATs, interwikis & navboxes appeared as regular to me. Do you know whether it is the MusicBrainz link template or the IMDb template? In my recent edit I used INXS discography at MusicBrainz instead of the MusicBrainz template. I am willing to change the IMDb link to INXS at the Internet Movie Database as well. Is it a browser problem? I edit using Firefox (primarily) and saw no problem, I sometimes use Safari - again no problem and am currently using IE on Vista - no problem.
      2. 'two new links are useless...'. Allmusic adds reviews of many of the albums in the article, adds US/CAN multi-chart peak positions of singles and albums that are not in the article; the article is unlikely to ever provide such details and so according to WP:ELYES (criteria #3 and #4) should be included; the Australian Rock Databse provides catalogue numbers for album releases into numerous markets/labels/formats/re-releases: its a more comprehesive list of albums than MusicBrainz but is weak in singles/tracklistings, nonetheless this link should be included for its albums information.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 00:15, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

All music does have links to album reviews... but... those album review links are already here on Wikipedia in the INXS album pages... where they should be. As mentioned... AMG isn't an evil link... but unless it is used as an inline citation for something specific... it is OK... but just as an external link... it's not req'd. here. The Real Libs-speak politely 00:38, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Now you're moving the goal posts, your argument is that Allmusic shouldn't be used in this article becuase it maybe/is used in the related INXS album articles. I don't see that proviso in the guidelines, afaik, WP:ELYES relates to the particular article that has the ELs not extended to cover any associated articles that may/may not have such links. Not all casual readers will go to the wiki albums pages to see those reviews/information but some may go to the External links section looking for the Allmusic site knowing the reviews/information is there.
By your logic any band article with associated albums on wiki should not have an Allmusic link in the EL section. Consider Tears For Fears, in your recent edit there you deleted one of the ELs (quite correctly), but while there why didn't you delete TFF biography as well? According to your logic it should go, but I would leave it included, although I prefer the more descriptive form Tears For Fears biography at Allmusic: it tells the casual reader what they're getting and from whom.
User:Wiki libs has subsequently deleted the Tears for Fears allmusic link from the EL section of that article, but I'm sure there are numerous other band/artist pages that still retain such an allmusic link despite having significant numbers of album/single pages on wikipedia. Before continuing this process, User:Wiki libs should change/clarify the policy in WP:ELYES to support such interpretation: until this occurs the allmusic link(s) should be returned.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 02:35, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing out my oversight on the Tears for Fears article. Feel free to delete any similar superfluous online music 'zines and "encyclopedias" from any/all music related pages. Have a nice day. The Real Libs-speak politely 02:51, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
      You haven't addressed the other issues I raised above.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 01:56, 23 November 2008 (UTC)(fixed typo)Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 02:04, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
      New ELs

New ELs are to be added, I decided to add the following two to the EL sectn:

These should be acceptable to User:Wiki libs, if not, could you first delete the similar links at AC/DC? In addition to these, you have still not addressed the other issues mentioned above.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 03:16, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I think the DMOZ link is terrific. I am the editor who orchestrated it's presense on the AC/DC page to begin with.(also the Motorhead page, Iron Maiden page, Rory Gallagher page.. countless others) It negates the reason to have any other external links and has a Wiki template to boot. Couldn't ask for anything better than that. The Real Libs-speak politely 03:24, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

      Discography section

According to discography guidelines this section should list main albums only. The section has a pointer to INXS discography and the article has a band navbox at Template:INXS. Consequently I am going to delete non-studio albums and slightly reformat existing display in the discography section.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 22:59, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

      Gallagher quote

Bono considered Michael Hutchence a huge influence on him, vocally. Many bands have made tributes to him, U2 "Stuck In A Moment" Duran Duran "Michael, You've got alot to answere for," REM "Strange Currencies" Pearl Jam "Given To Fly", the latter two were dedicated to him on many occasions, although not specifically written for him. Consider the following quote from a BBC News report:

Picking up a prize from the late Michael Hutchence at the 1996 awards, Liam Gallagher lectured the INXS singer that "has-beens shouldn't be presenting awards to gonna-bes".

      — "Brits behaving badly" in BBC News on 4 March 2000, reference is below.

      The article currently has:

At the 1996 BRIT Awards, Michael Hutchence presented Oasis with an award, after which their characteristically arrogant lead singer Liam Gallagher remarked "Has-beens shouldn't be presenting awards to gonna-bes".[1]

I have reverted both these changes with an edit summary indicating that the quote is referenced and that Liam not Noel was responsible. Also, I have placed a note within my recent edit,

The reference clearly states the quote belongs to Liam NOT Noel. Don't change this again, unless you have a better reference.

This is to alert any editor(s) that the change back to Noel should not be made without substantiation.Shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 21:30, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

        Logix ontinuity

The reffernces are place in a random manner. You cannot have ^45... ^8 .... ^5 ... ^6 ...^26, and especially not (^5)&(^6)&(^26) over the very samesentence in the article. By wikipedia.org policy of 'cross refferenciating' each Sentence needs One refference for validation. Assuming the input-output Kirchoff law, wikipedia.org marks each sentence with a refference that uniquely validates the article/sentence. So, one sentence in Wikipedia needs one external reffernce, and each external refference should speak of only one thing when it comes to a subject, say "Mylene Farmer sings Never tear us apart song", isn't it ? Why isn't she sayng plain simple: "this is my new album with the song INXS spoke about" ? Paul188.25.52.233 (talk) 14:28, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

when looking after TERM="never tear us appart" TRUTH search, the refferences written with superior i are FALSE: i=2 FALSE i=16 is reffering to a backstage singing, and there is no carbon coated paper available on the event. All sources are alike down to the annoying upper-held number. Check out http://www.tutorgig.com/ed/INXS "copy-paste text" for copyright , not the i=6 though. I=6 is TRUE i=16 links to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INXS#cite_note-Take40Bio-15" thus must be read as i=15. Be kind and take a note the refference is inside wikipedia.org domain, and thus cannot be considered a source, and not an external link. i=15 refference queried with TERM turns NULL, thus refference should be correcly marked as "citation needed" when assuming TERM i=72 (daily telegraph.au) refference reads as "rob thomas addmits entering a recording into a studio for work on the TERM song". The article does not VALIDATE the "ROB THOMAS sings for INXS the TERM song". Since Rob Thomas sang behind closed doors wikipedia has not the confirmation. 72 reff forwards to #71. Refference marked "71. ^" gives out NULL i=73 (cite note-72) speaks of plans & promises made to Rob Thomas, regarding future work-plans. By quoting Rob Thomas he invalidates "Mylene farmer as singer of "Never tear us appart", and names her "french female voice sings 'need you tonight'".

Please note: TRUTH & TRUTH gives out TRUTH, yet (TERM, TERM) (TRUTH) is interpreted differently by user & by wikipedia.org. Thus if (TERM1=TRUTH, TERM2=FALSE)(TRUTH) user points out TERM1 & TERM2 = TRUTH which is not true because (notTERM1 = TRUTH & NotTERM2 = FALSE) = TRUTH (wikipedia. policies). The math on wikipedia is SENTENCE-WITH-TERM.(cite=TRUTH). I'm scandalized over the never tear us appart rumours INXS spread out, after the dissolation of the band in 1997. In a previous court ruleing BONEY M., the Court stated the owners of the brand is each of the members can together only use the Boney M name. The issue was applied for the Boney M 2000 band's name when the lead singer was unavailable to the rest of the band so few have used on own reason its name. If INXS ANDREW FARRISS is unavailable the INXS is spoken just in roumors. The band's tried to revive the name with a bunch of lead singers and presumably they've failed.

        • By its own policies, wikipedia cannot say "Rob Thomas from the band Matchbox Twenty recorded the song "Never Tear Us Apart" and "Original Sin" with the band.[72][73]" if reading out the refferences (72) & (73) implied. By reading it one understands the french female voice sings "need you tonight" which denies the sentence "Mylene farmer sings "Never tear us appart".
        • Please allow the removal of the circular refferences comming off from other sources than printed/magazines "dailytelegraph.com.au", http://www.radioswissjazz.ch/cgi-bin/pip/html.cgi?lang=en&m=entity&v=b&w=INXS, and "Rolling Stone magazine", when assuming "Never tear us apart song".

        Expanded lead

I have already broadened the lead section a little. Anything else that I can do to expand? Thanks, Bulldog73 (talk) 18:23, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

        INXS and JD part ways

It's hard to believe that JD Fortune and INXS have parted ways for the second time! Edward Roussac (talk) 02:49, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

        Additional External links deleted

I've deleted two Michael Hutchence ELs: he has his own article and those ELs should go there. I also deleted the IMDb 'plate (even though I previously supported its presence here). I have become convinced that it is not considered to be reliable. Please do not re-add either of these without consensus.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 20:48, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Can someone please put up an INXS photo up with Michael not JD!

Ok so I am trying to change the photo of INXS because a lot of us think it should be a photo of the band with Michael Hutchence and not him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MegganRodgers (talkcontribs) 19:19, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

        Use of quotes

The first half of the article makes an extensive use of quotes that caused significant breaks in the reading. Are these really needed? Karst (talk) 10:17, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

        "(dec'ed)" in infobox

In general, if you boldly make a change and someone reverts your change, it is time to discuss the issue, per WP:BRD. Restoring your edit generally does little to solve the issue.

Yes, he is dead. So are Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Piece and a bunch of other people listed at James Buchanan; Judy Garland and others at The Wizard of Oz (1939 film) and most of the people listed at The Beatles, several at The Who, everyone at World War II, etc.

They're all as dead as Julius Caesar (dec'ed), but Wikipedia neither identifies them as such in the various info boxes, nor mentions it is passing in articles (except in those sections where the article is discussing their death relative to the topic.

If we did, we would have infoboxes crowded with "(deceased)" or "(dec'ed)" notes and strange sections reading: "Among the participants of the Conference were U.S. Secretary of State Stettinius (deceased), Ambassador Harriman (deceased), Harry L. Hopkins (deceased), General of the Army George C. Marshall (deceased), Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King (deceased), Fleet Admiral Leahy (deceased), Prime Minister Churchill (deceased), British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden (deceased), Major General Laurence S. Kuter (deceased) (representing General of the Army H.H. Arnold (deceased) who was unable to attend due to illness), Field Marshal H. Maitland Wilson (deceased), Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke (deceased), Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles F.A. Portal (deceased), Admiral of the Fleet Sir A.B. Cunningham (deceased), General Sir Hastings L. Ismay (deceased) and Major General Jacob (deceased)." - SummerPhDv2.0 21:10, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Per Template:Infobox_musical_artist, this field is for "Past members of the group, listed in order of joining with no other notation than names." (emphasis added). - SummerPhDv2.0 21:19, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Funny how no one meantioned Joy Division.....

Seriously? Why does this article not mention a word about Joy Division? It was the whole premise of this group and Love Will Tear us apart. I’m shocked no one has contributed this! Such a shame how he hung himself pre tour like that, just a sad story. But INXS was born out of the remaining guys and even the killers went on to cover the song to be a hit. Just think it should be included in this is all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:248:681:3D30:552C:78C5:1BE8:3CB4 (talk) 04:39, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Because Joy Division was the precursor of New Order, not INXS.

        INXS is/was Australian, Joy Division/New Order were/are British. 82.9.104.192 (talk) 15:15, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
