I added a to the claim that it is the first missile to give submarines a capability to engage air threats. The Akula class has an Igla-M/SA-N-10 Grouse launcher in the sail which allows it to engage aircraft or helicopters. It might better worded to say it is the first missile to allow a submarine to engage air threats whilst submerged.

The IDAS system wasn't the first to engage air threats whilst submerged either. In the 1970s Vickers and the Royal navy tested a system entitled SLAM (submarine launched air missile) which comprised a set of previously land based Blowpipe missiles around a sighting mast mounted on the conning tower of HMS Aeneas (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowpipe_missile) While the system didn't go into service it did work and thus predates both the IDAS and the Akula type system. I've never heard of the Akula class (I assume you mean the Shchuka class) having a SAM launcher but I do know the the Kilo class has one mounted in the sail. As far as wording, I thought that it would better to state that it was the first SAM designed specifically for a submarine application, as opposed to be adapted from an existing system. Or maybe, it could be stated that it was the first operational missile to allow a submarine to engage air threats whilst submerged. -Noha307 (talk) 23:47, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Suggested Merge

I would suggest that this page be merged with the parent page of IRIS-T due to the following reasons;

• This article is a stub
• This article has little or few references
• This article is more likely to be successful by merging with IRIS-T

• Oppose: submarine launch seems sufficiently distinct that the pages should be kept separate. There are also several more recent web articles discussing this system (like [1]), so there is scope for expansion. Klbrain (talk) 21:05, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Designer

All the companies mentioned in the Designer section has taken part in designing and developing the system? Or actually one of them is designing, others are for manufacturing and bearing a cost? SReader21 (talk) 01:45, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Cost of IDAS: currency not mentioned

The cost is given as "1,300,000 estimated", but the currency isn't given. What currency? And what's the source of the estimate?
