The description published here is woefully inadequate. The term "hypothetical constructs" refers to "entities" that are unobserved, but are presumed to exist. Such entities as "receptors" and "atoms" were once hypothetical constructs. Intervening variables are simply names given to observed relations. The term "hunger," for example, is applied when, say, food-restriction produces eating. The animal or person is said to "show hunger" or to "be hungry." Intervening variables are often mistaken for hypothetical constructs, or are often viewed as hypothetical constructs.
