Talk:Hydroelectric power in New Zealand

Latest comment: 4 years ago by Bellabella14 in topic Article lacks balanced perspective

Primary ? edit

"Hydroelectric power accounts for 11% of the total primary energy usage in New Zealand.[2] Over the decade from 1997 hydroelectric power as a percentage of total net electricity generated went from 66% down to 55%.[3]"

Somehow, that first bit doesn't seem right. I may be getting the definition of "primary" wrong, but how does this match the second statistic anyway? Ingolfson (talk) 08:53, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have made an attempt at clarification. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 10:39, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article lacks balanced perspective edit

The tone of the article as it stands today appears unbalanced, in that it highlights environmental impact, opposition and protest, but has minimal acknowledgement of the contribution that the construction of hydro-electric power stations have made to life in New Zealand, or the economic wellbeing of the country. Hydro-electric power schemes can have a large environmental impact. However, compared to many other countries, New Zealand has a relatively low level of dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation, and this is only because of the large investments in hydro-generation made over many decades. A more balanced approach is required.Marshelec (talk) 05:59, 13 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yep, I agree but unfortunately it all depends on the volunteer editors getting around to it. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 04:28, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, I willing to do more than just moan, and could put some work into this. However, it is not easy to decide how far to go with this page. If you can suggest a broad scope of work, I will give it a go. Marshelec (talk) 03:13, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Great! Feel free to go as far as you like. Any content that is too detailed for this overview can always be split out into its own article. As for what needs doing I would suggest the following (bold is current or possible section headings):
  • History - expand as suggested. Info about the major canals schemes in the Nth and Sth Islands should be added. The various reforms by govt should also be added.
  • List of hydroelectric power stations - can be copied from List of power stations in New Zealand
Not sure if the economic wellbeing issue can be easily separated from the other forms of electricity generation. Will add more if it comes to me. Hope that helps. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 08:47, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm new to editing Wikipedia and am interested in revising this article to balance the perspective on the economic and financial benefits of hydroelectric power in the last decade (2010-present), as well as updating the history section. If you have any comments / suggestions on what to add specifically let me know! Bellabella14 (talk) 21:08, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
