Always pumping? edit

Given that fluids are generally incompressible, how do hydraulic pumps handle situations where the fluid may not be flowing anywhere (i.e. when the downsteam valves are closed)? Water pumps are generally used to pump water within an unrestricted loop (cooling systems) or to destinations vented to the atmosphere. I think the article should touch on this. --Hooperbloob (talk) 02:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

there has to be an opening, diversion or relief valve on any long line to prevent water hamer.Wdl1961 (talk) 04:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to merge article? edit

I have been looking over the articles on pumps, and it seems this article duplicates much of the information in the main pump article-- and it looks like all that differentiates a hydraulic pump from any other kind is the power source. To the extent that this is not true, the article should reflect it; to the extent that it is, the article is redundant. Thoughts? KDS4444Talk 14:09, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • oppose Hydraulic pumps are a notable topic in their own right. Fix the article if it needs it, but this is no reason to merge. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:53, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
