Origins of Hyder Ali
Dear Wikipedia; It was very common for converts to Islam in South Asia to claim that they were descendants of the prophet Muhammad in order to conceal their previous caste, therefore it is likely that Hyder Ali was a descendant of local Mysore Muslims. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.182.127.229 (talk) 12:50, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- Many people in the United States claim to believe in astrology; does that mean it is true (or "more likely")? Diverging claims of Hyder's ancestry are apparently quite common, given that several are already listed here. This is why we use reliable sources to distinguish the ones we include from the ones we exclude. If you can document (i.e. cite a suitable historian) that claiming descent from Muhammad (i.e. caste concealment) was not unusual for the time, that might actually be useful here. A separate specific assertion (by a historian) that this was (or may have been) the reason for Hyder's claim will also be needed. Thanks for your contributions, by the way. Encyclopedia Britannica
Could the person who copied this from 1911encyclopedia.com clean this up? There is no reason for Wikipedia to have an unimproved version of text already available someplace else. --mav

Year Hyder became dalwai
User John rajasekaran claims Hyder was named dalwai in 1759, apparently claiming Bowring supports this. Bowring does not support this contention; if you want to pursue the claim, you will need a different source. On p. 29 Bowring states that Hyder became army chief in 1759. There were then palace intrigues, and Hyder was not named dalwai until 1761 (pp. 32-33). Magic♪piano 12:57, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
