Hunglish is a portmanteau word combining the words Hungarian and English. The phrase refers to:

  • specific mistakes often committed by native Hungarian speakers while speaking English.
  • mistakes in Hungarian because of the influence of the English language[1][2].
  • a hybrid of Hungarian and English used within couples where one is a Hungarian speaker and the other an English speaker.
  • Hungarian words or phrases being used in English language (and vice versa) either to substitute for a non-existent word or to achieve a certain effect in meaning. This practice is very common among students of bilingual high schools in Hungary (e.g. "Ne complainingelj!"). The words may or may not be subject to conjugation.
