Translation of the name

There was a discussion on the transaltion of the party name, which can be found at Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Language/2008_November_30. --Soman (talk) 12:37, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Really interesting. As far as I understand, the debate concluded that no Hungarian speaker believes it is a correct translation. On the other hand, books and titles cited by you are a serious argument - but I cannot find any "official" character of them. I feel some ideological intentions behind this translation, however.

So I am not fully convinced.

Anyway, I tried to correct the article in general, 'cause it hardly contains any correct information, unfortunately. This is why I am surprised that there was a debate on the title - only.

Searching in google books gives quite a few hits that point in the direction of HWPP being the official translation. For example The results of the first year of the five-year plan and our future tasks in building a socialist economy. Report of the second congress of the Hungarian Working People's Party, February 25, 1951, published by Hungarian News and Information Service, 1951. More examples [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16].

I understand that this translation is a bit odd (the word 'people' does not figure in the Hungarian original name), and probably this was an awkward way for the political translators at the time to express the differentiation between Dolgozók and Munkás into English. Notably, translations in French or German did not include the words peuple or volk, since those languages allowed for other semantic demarkations from the old social democratic parties. --Soman (talk) 14:23, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

I moved back to the original title while a RFM is in progress (if there will be one). When the RFM is concluded the page can be moved to the new title, however the number of sources brought by Soman seems convincing. Is there any consistent use for the Workers variant, used for this party? Hobartimus (talk) 20:44, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
