Talk:Huangshui River

Article Name edit

I suspect that this article does not meet Chinese Naming Conventions for place names. All Chinese references to this river that I can find are as "湟水 (Huang Shui)". Huangshui River appears to be a tautological translation. I know the page should be moved, but I'm not sure if it would be best to translate the name to Huang River or Huang Water. The latter, although it may sound a bit strange, has a precedent in English among some UK rivers (e.g Whiteadder Water, Liddel Water, and many others). I contend that a British waterway called "X Water" is not analogous to a Chinese waterway translated from "X Shui", but I'm not convinced that "Huang River" would be the best translation, especially considering it is a tributary of the Huang He (also a "Huang River"). Any advice would be appreciated. --NoGhost (talk) 02:18, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Are any of your suggested translations attested in reliable sources? On Google Books I can only find scholarly references to Huangshui River (e.g. this) and Xining River, the former I think being more common. We should only create our own translations where none are available. Also, 湟水河 (Huangshui River) is a fairly common alternative name for the river. Cobblet (talk) 14:20, 20 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Cobblet: Thanks for the advice! I've realized now that 湟水河 is commonly used, for some reason I thought it was referring to a completely different river last time I checked. In this case, Huangshui River should stay in use. --NoGhost (talk) 20:18, 20 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
