I think Western economics literature refers to this as a "private plot", emphasizing the notion that private property gives people a much better incentive to produce than collective farming. Several articles on agriculture in Communist countries concede the existence of private plots, and I'd like to assemble the claims and counterclaims about productivity on them. Are they really 10 to 20 times as productive as collectives? If so, why? And why have the commissars tried so hard to suppress them, even when famine was the result?
