National Book Award edit

Thank you for your interest in the National Book Foundation, and I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. As far as your query regarding the 1958 National Book Awards, Eli Seigel's Hot Afternoons Have Been in Montana was a finalist in the poetry category in 1958. In the 1950's the National Book Awards (established in 1950) consisted of only three categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. In 1958 there were 13 finalists in the poetry category, of which one winner was picked. Though the number of finalists varied slightly by category and by year, 13 seems pretty indicative of the number of finalists in any given category during the 50's and early 60's. I hope you find this information helpful, and if you have any additional questions please feel free to contact me.

Best, Adah Nuchi, National Book Foundation
