Reason for {{Cleanup}}

The article needs to be wikified, some links added, etc. --S.K. 15:02, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

It also needs better content. The current content is unclear and as best I can tell incorrect.... --Macrakis 18:02, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

It seems to me that:

Vertical vs. horizontal are two extreme answers to the question "how diverse is the selection of targeted consumers in terms of their core business activity, compared to their diversity on other criteria?"

It should be noted that a market's being "vertical" or "horizontal" is subject to a specific vendor's choice of how to slice the universe of all potential consumers called "the market" and select which of them to target.

Horizontal tageting thus slices the market to "horizontal" consumer sectors which share a more diverse range of core business activities and needs, than does vertical tageting. The more "vertical" the target market is chosen to be, the more specialized must the vendor be in satisfying the needs of narrower business sectors, and the less he needs to worry about satisfying the needs of diverse kinds of users. The more versatile and adaptable products are to be used by different kinds of users, the more fit they are for horizontal targeting.

This concept can be generalized as a matrix in which all potential consumption is characterized by 2 dimensions:

Horizontal: the consumer's core business activity

Verical: any other charcteristics of the consumption such as its position in a certain supply chain, its magnitude, its geographic distribution, or its distribution among other demographic charcteristics.

added a bit more detail on vertical markets and clarified that they have not only sellers but vertical buyers as well. I also noted that horizontal market participants will sometimes try to "invade" a vertical or niche market to gain a presence by being "good enough" for some purposes. POS = Horizontal, surely?

The example given is:

"An example of this sort of market is the market for point-of-sale terminals, which are often designed specifically for similar customers and aren't available for purchase to the general public."

Depending exactly which devices this is meant to refer to, this appears to be exactly wrong. Many different industries use exactly the same terminals. --213.162.124.198 03:01, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Term as a "buzz word"

There should be a brief section discussing the use of the term "vertical market" as a buzzword. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.65.114.100 (talk) 18:32, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
