Obvious Question Not Answered by the Article edit

What explains the color of the lake?

After sucking deep lakes in the vicinity, including Lake Apple and, of course, Lake Bake, the honey color of the lake seemed a startling mystery. When I saw it for the first time, I figured it was shallow, alkaline, and probably (as of last weekend, April 29 and 30, 2007) swollen by snowmelt. Can I assume that the color of the lake is created by the color of the local soil covered by a layer of water so shallow the lake bottom remains visible?
