  • There is a problem with the style of referencing in this article, as it is unclear exactly what is being sourced. For example, the following paragraph cites reference 4 at its conclusion:
In September 1919, the working class movement founded the first Portuguese Labour Union Confederation, the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) that saw a steady increase to 100,000 members in few months.[citation needed] But the feeling of political powerlessness, due to the lack of a coherent political strategy among the Portuguese working class, plus the growing popularity of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917, led to the foundation of the Portuguese Maximalist Federation (FMP) in 1919.[citation needed] The goal of FMP was to promote socialist and revolutionary ideas and to organize and develop the worker movement. The FMP started publishing the weekly Bandeira Vermelha (Red Flag) which became a popular newspaper among the Portuguese working classes.[1]

It is unclear what reference 4 is being used to source. The entire paragraph? If so, reference should be made on each point, including to the relevant page. However, is, then the paragraph and article are overly dependent on just one reference. Juniper§ Liege (TALK) 05:17, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I will give another example of the problem:
After the military coup of May 28, 1926, the Party was outlawed, and had to operate in secrecy. By coincidence, the coup was carried out on the eve of the second congress, forcing the suspension of the tasks. In 1927 the Party's Main Office was closed. The Party was first reorganized in 1929 under Bento Gonçalves. Adapting the Party to its new illegal status, the reorganization created a net of clandestine cells to avoid a wave of detentions.[6]

What exactly is reference 6 sourcing in this paragraph? The outlawing of the party; suspension of second congress; closure of the offices; reorganisation? Again, pages have to be cited to where these facts can be found in the artile. Juniper§ Liege (TALK) 05:22, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

A ref at the bottom of the pharagraph usually means the whole pharagraph is referenced by it. --TIAYN (talk) 06:06, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
A reference should generally be placed at the end of a sentence which sources material from it.... even if an entire paragraph is sourced from the same reference, as otherwise this can lead to confusion as to what exactly is being referenced. Alternatively, text can be incorporated into the paragraph to denote that a single source is being used for the paragraph. For instance, the opening sentence can directly name the reference (eg: Communist Party document), with a footnote at the end of the paragraph, so that it is clear that the reference cited at the beginning extends to the end of the paragraph. Additionally, references must always come at the end of quotes, no exception, which was also a format problem in this article. ✽ Juniper§ Liege (TALK) 19:53, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • There is also a problem with some editoralising, such as "remarkable event" and "The reorganization of 1929 made the Party more effective and influential"- this affects the articles compliance with NPOV guidelines.

To uphold the quality of Wikipedia:Good articles, all articles listed as Good articles are being reviewed against the GA criteria as part of the GA project quality task force. While all the hard work that has gone into this article is appreciated, unfortunately, as of February 16, 2010, this article fails to satisfy the criteria, as detailed below. For that reason, the article has been delisted from WP:GA. However, if improvements are made bringing the article up to standards, the article may be nominated at WP:GAN. If you feel this decision has been made in error, you may seek remediation at WP:GAR. This action has been taken immediately because 1) there have been no content improvements made to this article since October 2009; denoting a lack of interest in this page within the community at the current period; 2) The article requires extensive attention and improvement, and is very unlikely to be brought up to GA standard within 7 days. The article has failed GA criteria per the review set out below:

  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose):
    • The article generally reads well, though is not above improvement. The lead is good and of the correct length.
    b (MoS):
    • The article has issues with overlinking, per WP:OVERLINK. Reference information is also erratic - some give publication dates, other don't; some give authors, others don't; etc. They need to be standardised.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
    a (references):
    • The article is very poorly referenced; many assertions are made which are not supported with sources or substantiated in the text. Either sources need to be found or large portions of the article will have to be removed.
    b (citations to reliable sources):
    • There are a variety of dead and broken links. Also, alot of sources include "timelines" - as these are dead links I have not been able to examine their quality, but timelines generally do not quality as reliable sources, per WP:RS.
    c (OR):
    • Given the lack of sourcing it is impossible to verify the extent to which the article includes original research; in the absence of references, one has no choice but to infer that much of the material may be OR.
  3. It is broad in its scope.
    a (major aspects):
    • Addresses major aspect of article subject matter.
    b (focused):
    • Remains focused. No digressions.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy:
    • There are some problems with POV in this article. Again, this has to do with the alck of sources, but there is also an over-reliance on material that would be better used in a sparing manner - such as reference 4, which is a publication of the communist party. Whilst it is ok to use a communist party publication (for certain aspects) it should be supplumented with other sources. I generally did not have a problem with the tone of the article, which for the most part seemed to present the history in an open and fair way, because of the lack of sources I can only judge what the article "seems" to be saying, which is not good enough for a GA article.
  5. It is stable:
    • No edit wars etc.
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales):
    • As the image of the funeral is a copyright picture it needs far greater justification and fair-use substantiation than currently exits/
b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
    • Images are accompanied by contextual captions.
  7. Overall:
