General

I can't help but wonder whether some of the information in the article is completely incorrect. For example:

Richard Chang -- the linked article says that he is of Malaysian heritage, but makes no mention that he is from Penang. Based on the text of the article, I don't think he's Jewish (note his answer to the question "Are you Jewish?" He says "Not that I know of.") The article is about a play he wrote about Jewish-Chinese cross-cultural issues, but there's no indication that he is a practicing Jew or even identifies as Jewish. Regardless, I'm not sure why it's relevant to mention him in an article specifically about Jews of Penang in a section of "Notable Penangite Jews."

Under the "History" section, the content refers to "Jewish ceremonies -- such as bar mitzvah." The main reason one needs ten men is to form a minyan for prayer. A bar mitzvah requires a minyan in order to give the bar mitzvah boy an aliyah at a prayer service. Without a minyan, a Jewish community is unable to conduct communal prayer services for any of the holidays, including the high holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In other words, I'm confused about why the article refers to the inability to call a bar mitzvah boy to the Torah as one of the main reasons for the dissolution of the community rather than the complete inability to hold a communal prayer service for any reason, including the high holidays.

There is also the assertion that the community contains members of China's Kaifeng Jewish community, who ostensibly fled China as a result of the communist takeover. Why is there no mention of this anywhere in any other story of the fate of the Kaifeng Jews? I have no doubt Chinese Jews came to Malaysia, perhaps even to Penang following the collapse of the Nationalist régime in China, but I think it's most likely these were Baghdadis, rather than Kaifeng Jews. That's my sheer speculation, but it sounds more plausible than what presently appears, uncited, in the article. Tomer^talk 00:32, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

of the House of Eliyahu survives persecution,and lives happily in Singapore. For time immemorial the world has had a love- hate realtionship with the Jews. Jews have been hunted, cursed and condemned, exiled and slaughtered.Jews have suffered under the shadow of the cresent. The separatness of a jew attracts respect followed by envy, at times admired and emulated and most of the time universaly acknowledged.Jews are a subject of persecution, deprived of freedom education,career ,life and living. Yet jews are able to do what no nation, no empire, no other people has ever done in the course of all of history- survive!The Persians, the Greeks, and the romans have been stripped from the earth, but a small tribe, whose origins preceded that of those great nations, still exist in Israel and the diapora.People question what is the wonder when all things are mortal, so is the jew but why he is survives to date ? the last seremban jewish boy

Well he is safe here in Singapore. It was a horrible begining for him there in Malaysia. It is unfortunate he was stuck behind, forgotten by his own people.This ' last jewish boy of seremban" is one of the precious stone of Malaysia, but the Malaysian lost a great talented person.He always projected a very speacial significant diffrence that we could not see in all our students at the St Pauls Instituition.I must admit it is his jewishness. Yet he was very down to earth.The truth is they took his land, set fire to his house and reduced him to nothing cos he refused to convert into a Muslim.As a result his prospect of higher education was taken away.The universities in Malaysia shut the doors on him.We are glad he is in Singapore.We praise God for the miracle of his existence and give Glory to God.We wish we could have done more to liberate the last jewish boy of Seremban.We have received many enquiries from many convent nuns from france,Ireland and India about this boy.We decided not to reaveal his identity as it was too dangerous for him. We honestly believed that muslim might take him away to the madrasah.So we baptised him and hid him within our catholic community in good faith.He would have been a good catholic priest,he has the sharpness for the books.Very rare,very unique child.Thank you.

Here the information on the " The Last Jewish Boy " of Seremban,( Rahang New Village) Negeri Sembilan.

The Catholic LaSalle Brothers,headed by Rev Brother James Macken, an Irish clergy, contributed towards the early education of the last jewish boy.In 1980 the last jewish boy was rescued by the Rev Fr.Joachim Tan,(and his nephew Benjamin) a diocesen priest of the Church of Visitation in Seremban.The last jewish boy of the remnant of the House of Elihu in Seremban left for Singapore after escaping great persecution in 1980's to 1990's.Before he left for Singapore he was rescued and protected by the Jesuit Society of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.The two prominant Jesuits of Malaysia , namely Fr Jojo S Fung (SJ)and Fr. Larry Tan (SJ) safed the life of the last jewish boy of Seremban.It is reported that the last jewish boy of Seremban is a free man living happily in Singapore with the help of the Jesuit Society of Singapore,namely Fr. Collin Tan and Fr Philip Heng SJ.The Redemptorist Arm of the Singapore Novena Church ( Fr .Wiliam Heng ).The Franciscan Capuchin Friars ( Fr Rawi Alexander and Rev Bro Francis), of the Church of St Francis of Assisi,in Cheras Kuala Lumpur also played a big role in salvaging the last jewish boy of Seremban. The last Seremban Jewish boy continued his studies under the Jesuit House Society Fundings of Singapore -Malaysia and graduated from ,the faculty of law, Bukit Timah Campus, the National University of Singapore. He returned to the Orthodox Judaism Community of Singapore to Rabbi Mordechai Abergel of Singapore, the rabbi of the Sephardic Community at Waterloo Street.

The Singapore People Action Party ( PAP) has been defending the hopes, freedom of the Jews of Seremban.The late Foreign Affairs Minister of Singapore, Mr Rajaratnam and rescued the last Seremban Jewish boy. Singapore has been the nation blessed by Jews for being a place of refuge and protection. Singapore is a great nation, a door way between the east and the west.

The House of Eliyahu in the Diaspora and Israel records their great appreciation and give thanks to the People Action Party and Members of Parliament, namely the Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Minister Mentor Mr. Lee Kwan Yew, Senior Minister Mr.Goh Chok Thong, Senior Minister Mr. Jayakumar, DPM Mr. Wong Kan Seng, Minister Mr. Hari Kumar, Minister Dr Ng Eng Han , Dr Ong Sei Hong and Dr Alex Su for protecting and to have rescued the last Jewish boy of Seremban. In Malaysia there has been attempts to destroy the records of the origins of ,Indian Jews, Cochin Jews or Kerala Jews of Seremban ( mostly forgotten and set aside by systemic pressure within Judaism and Government pressure in Malaysia).The last Seremban Jewish boy was placed in muddle and shambles of hardship just for being a Jew by birth and a Jew by choice. Kristang Jews?

There is no such thing as Kristang Jew, who are commonly deemed or also wrongfully know as Shepardic Jews. In fact, the Shepardic Jews, their religion is Judaism the religion of the 10 laws and 613 commndments. Where as, the Kristang Catholic/ xtians refers to decendands of Portugese and natural peopel of Melaka ( to be specific ).The Locals decent( eg Malays, Chinese, Indians inter- marriage births) married ,co- habited, and were some keeps of the Europeans ( English Portugese, French, Irish , Spainish). So you have Potugese of Melaka, Anglo-Indians of Malaya, Goanese etc. Kristang is also synom and a reference the language of Eurasians- Kristang- Grago language. Very often misconstrued, for example Debal Curry is mis-said as Devil Curry.

Hebrew is the offcial religious language of the Jews.Yiddish is also widely spoken by the European Jews.There are also judeo-malayalam spoken widely by malabar jews, cochini jews, where basicaly the majority are the meyuhasheem group of jews of Kerala.

The Seremban Jew were of Mlabar/Cochini jews origins, by region are of malayali jews living in Malaya. Although in Malaya it is true that mostly of Jews are Judaisms Shepardic decent,with a minorty of indian jews, some inter-married with the local and assimilated to avoid anti-semitism.Children born of the mixed marriages with at least one parent-jews are jews. The law is that if the father is a jew, the child is a jew and if the mother is a jew the child is also jew. The rabbinic laws and the Secular laws of Israel recognises jews of inter-marrige though they seem to be a trend to treat them with caution.Laws of Return 1972 of Israel are being a subject of abuse too.

So get it right, Kristang Jews are catholics/ xtians, they are not Jews within Torah Judaism proper. Jews have been reduced to nothing in some countries. Jews were subject of persecution from both the Muslim and Catholic/Xtians.Never the less catholic missionaries have played a role in protecting Jews of Malaya.

The Jews observe the 13 Divine Attibutes of Moshe Maimonites. The 10 laws and 613 commandments,they observe within their limitations.These laws also works against them by fact that the Jews have lost their two temples of jerusalem to foreign conquest.

The Kristang are Catholics /xtains that have written their own written version of religious books called The Old Testiment and the New Testiment,which is totally far from the Sefer Torah and the Talmud/Chumash of the Jew -Shepardic.

Early followers of jesus were know as the Ebionites,but not the Catholics or xtians. neverthe less the Catholic Church was one time a Judaic Cathoilc Church which have moved away from Judaic practices over the ages. Roman paganism penetrated the Catholic Churces, to the point the little judaic similar traditions also erroded over the ages. Evagelical churches follow suit.

Please take note , there is no such thing as Kristang Jews in Judaism.

Read the 13 Divine attributes as propounded by the Famous Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Maimonides and see for your self to understand the believe system of the Judaism Jews, which are far separate and distinctly diffrent from Kristang Catholic /xtians.

By the way the terminology Jews dosent exist anywhere in the Sefer Torah.The term " jews" were of the creation of anti-semitism which has become a fashionable term attributed to the Israeli and the diaspora israelis.The Judaic israelites are the children of Prophet Jacob- the tree of life,of the house of Jacob, that dates and originates to the very Prophet Avraham ben Avinu ,and if you go even back their history starts with day one of creation in the Torah-the Adam and Eve line and the lienage of the Jewish People are one from the begining. The lineage is a golden thread that never snapped to date by their continuity in heritage.Their origins and the book-Torah has the records to date .Jews have kept them going by the Observance of the Law of Shabaat and the high holidays eg- Yom Kippur, Pesah, Hanukkah, Rosh hasannah,Purim,Shavout, Sukkot, many more seasons that bring the heritage and soul of the jews to the very heartbeat of jewsihness and Judaism.Event the tradition of Rosh hasannah,tradition of Yom kippur, the story of Rom Amnon. Kol nidrei, challah, honey and apples, the four spices , sisu ve,hallel, the menorah, the story of Judith. Latkes and apple sause, star of david , megillat ester. taanit ester- purim hamanstshen (these high holidays mentioed above, the Kristangs dont observe BUT the jews do observe fervently.)

Both the Shepardic Jews and Azkenazim Jews relive the great revelation of Adokim, in the Pesah, the story of exodus, the seder table, the hagaddah, matzo cover and the placement of napkin set are not familiar to the Kristangs.Personal opinions rooted in the Shabbat Observance and Jewish High holiday are holi days of obligations but not holiday in the ordinary sense like any public holidays for non- jews.These are the very realism of the menifestation of Judaic life and living which is very far away from the kristangs of Melaka.Jew of Malaysia who were left behind went underground and some even were assimilated into other religions.Some were forced to convert. Some fell due to poverty and social pressures . Some fell into calculated social engineering policies of Islamization Ideologies.

OK. But that still doesn't answer my question. Those who claim to be Jews of Kristang origin as noted by the recent edits in the articles, are they of Sephardic origin or are they recent converts / adherents? And it doesn't really help this Talk page to go on an apologetics discourse on Judaism vs. Catholicism. Apart from personal opinions, what are the reliable sources that can be cited to support the existence of a currently active Jewish community in Malaysia (underground or otherwise). More on the Cochin Jews- the Malabar Jews (the Coastal jews),Meyuhasheem Jews ( Group),Pardesi jews, Meshuhararim Jews( Released Jews) ( Group), Rabbanim Jews

The Cochini Jews are known with many names e.g The Malabar jews,Meyuhasheem Jews,Pardesi jews, Meshuhararim Jews, Rabban Jews , the list is long, just to name a few here. The biggest jewish group Meyuhassim or Meyuhasheem are part of the Cochini Community. The Meyuhasheem groups arrived in Cochin in the time of King Solomon. Another batch came in as lost tribe of Israel venturing into South East Asia. Some arrived in India after being exiles during the time of King Nebuchadnezzar. Most of them moved and settled within the Malay Archipelago and Hindu Kingdoms .As such the Meyuhasheem Group also shares the honor with the Rabbans of Kerala. The heritage of the Anjuvarnam is an equal right to exist with the decendants of the Cherans of Kerala. THE KRISTANG AND SHEPARDI JEWS

The root origins of Sephardic Jews goes back to the 18 century Spain. The 18 century gave birth to two separate cultures.

One -Sephardim or Sepharad or sefarad meand Spain of the Mediterranean basin.Two - the Azkenazim- the European Jewry. The Separdim Jews arrived in/ went to Spain after the babylonian conquest- exactly 586 CE after the temple of jerusalem was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar II. So JewiSh refugees arrived in Spain/Shepard- Sefarad- and formed Sephardic Jewish Communities in Spain.They spoke hebrew and later developed a judeo-spainish and judeo arabic language.The culture and music of the spainish and judeo origins were oriental.

TWO- Unlike the Sephardic Jewish communities the azhkenazim are another jewish culture, of yisrael jews that settled/or refugeed in the European countries-Germany, Dutch etc. As such the term Azkenazim extends to Jews of the western, central ,eastern European world.They spoke hebrew, european language and developed yiddish lingo.

Having said the above,i must qualify that both the Shepardic and Azkenazim are not two separate peoples. For us jews we are one same jewish and torah jews on one single code of law- Shulchan Arush. Both the shepardim and Azkenazim survived the old conquest rival kingdoms and greek, roman and the early Christin Periods BC 711,later the muslim conquest 711-1492 CE.

The KRISTANG are a creole Eurasian mixed with the Protugese(exclusive) with the Melaka decents. The are other groups like The Melaka -Melayu Portugese Creole and similarly there are Indian, Chinese -Portugese creole too.

The whole origins of the creole were of inter-marriage liason with the Portuguese Cristao or also known as Gragok Gente Kristang.The current Kristangs often refer themselves to the European ancestary in general. It is to be cautioned that the Dutch and British ancestary are not part of the kristang ancestary of the exclusive Portugese decent.

The Separdic Jews-the Malabar Jews or the Cochini Jews are a separate distinct group of Torah Jews , those that never took the catholic or xtian religion.

Althought it is frequently AND WRONFULLY understood that Kristang are JEWS WHO HAVE converted to Catholics or xtain religion of the news testiment. IT MUST BE RECTIFIED THAT A JEW WHO CONVERTED TO OTHER RELIGION ARE DEEMED TO HAVE ABROGATED THEIR RIGHTS OUT OF THE TORAH!

Those who converted to Catholic/xtain or evangelical are not TORAH JEWS- Shepardic jews. So Kristang are not KOSHER Jews or a Ben Israel ! Kristang are Catholic/xtian a separate religion and NOT JUDAISM.

Kristang dose not equal Judaism.

So what is the Catholic Credo ? Compare the Moshe Maimonides Code of the shepardic and azkenasim Jews with the Kristang?

Can you see, that Kristangs claim to be converted shepardic jews.Kristangs are not Torah Judaic Communities of Shepardic, Azkenazim, Meshrahim or Cochini Jews, Bagdadai Jews, Morrocan Jews etc.There are many kind of jews from the diaspora and in israel but Kristang are not of the house of Yisrael-House of Jacob subject of the law/ Torah- 10 laws 613 commandments.

Kristangs have 10 commandments the OT and the NT.Kristangs are Catholic/ Xtians.

We Shepardic Jews are of the House of Jacob our ancestors received the 10 laws at the Mount Sinai and we have the law and the faith of one G-d- the Lrd G-d of Yisrael. The 10 law are forming part of the 7 noachide laws ( 7+3= 10 laws) which contains the 613 commandments. The first commandments were obligated on PRIMODIAL Adam and all jews -TO PROCREATE. The Jewish Semolina Cake of the Seremban Jews. ( Malaysia)

The Jewish Semolina Cake of the Seremban Jews- often said to be of Eurasian KRISTANG Recipy.. 350 g butter 275 g caster suger 250 g semolina flour 55 g all purpose flour 50 g preserved or crystalized melon pices, chopped. 2 table spoon of diced orange peel or lemon peel 110 g almond chopped 15 egg yolks 1/2 teaspoon mixed spices (the magic jewish five spice powder) 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. 1 cup of brandy ( 4 oz)

1. mix semolina, flour, melon preserve lemon or orange peel with the jewish 5 spices. 2. Whip egg yoke with half the caster sugar till light and fluffy. 3.Cream butter with the rest of teh sugar together with vanilla flavour 4.Fold in the creamed egg yoke mixture. 5. Add the mixed dry ingredients and brandy 6. Just stir lightly to well mix 7. Turn batter into lined and greased 9 inch cake tin. 8. Bake in apreheated oven at 175 C for 1 hour until golden brown 9. test with the skewer if the skewer comes out clean the cake is done. 10. Icing the cake with royal icing, or glace ( lemon or orange ). This cake is jewish enough to heal all your hurts. Happy Cake for Hanukka and Rosh Hasnnah.

I tried this Semolina Cake recipe of the Seremban Jews,definately the formula survived the Cristianos Nuevos.This recipe is very relevant and contributes to the culinary collection, art and skills of the Jewish People.The writer has contibuted to the richness of the Jewish Culture and Jewish Heritage through the recipe as well, just like any other tradition or culture.Each period of history and culture of the jewish people projects the emergence of the flourishing jewish people and tradition in the places they arrived and lived , as such they left their jewish heritage in this semolina cake.Such is the case of the jews of seremban.This jewish semolina cake is one with a jewish soul that adds to the richness of the jewishness that have lived through ages withstanding all adversities of life. The facts on Seremban Jews.

The house of Eliyahu and the Meyuhasheem ( merchant families).The Meyuhasheem use to have business at the old market street in Seremban,Negeri Sembilan. Along the Church of Visitation ( formally know as Jalan Paul , they had 6 shops one of which is a bakery.The meyuhasheem house mysteriously wiped out by fire and the only grandson of the Meyuhasheem was taken away from Seremban- rescued by the Catholics- The Local Catholics (diocesan) and the Jesuit Community of Malaysia.The Franciscan Capuchin Friars played a role in saving the last jew of seremban- the Meyuhasheem boy.The Semolina cake is a real classic of teh meyuhasheem family.The Jewish families I mention above are not Kristang. The Kristangs are practicing Roman Catholics also known as Portuguese Kris-tang or Portuguese Cristao.These days many new converts to Catholic Religions decoy as Melaka-Kristang when they are not.The genuine Kristang Settlement is at Ujong Pasir Melaka. It is unfortunate he was stuck behind, forgotten by his own people.This ' last jewish boy of seremban" is one of the precious stone of Malaysia, but the Malaysian lost a great talented person.He always projected a very speacail significant diffrence that we could not see in all our students at the St Pauls Instituition.I must admit it is his jewishness. Yet he was very down to earth.The truth is the took his land, set fire to his house and reduced him to nothing cos he refused to convert into a Muslim.As a result his prospect of higher education was taken away.The universities in Malaysia shut the doors on him.We are glad he is in Singapore.We praise God for the miracle of his existence and give Glory to God.We wish we could have done more to liberate the last jewish boy of Seremban.We have received many enquiries from many convent nuns from france,Ireland and India about this boy.We decided not to reaveal his identity as it was too dangerous for him. Larry Tan (SJ) safed the life of the last jewish boy of Seremban.It is reported that the last jewish boy of Seremban is a free man living happily in Singapore with the help of the Jesuit Society of Singapore,namely Fr. As long as the contributions meet the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia, there would be no objection to their addition. As of this moment, they do not, and therefore should not be restored. One of the main reasons why the article was previously protected was because of a series of soapbox type write-ups by one or more IP users on the Jewish community in Seremban. While the material would be a useful addition to this article, it lacked sources and pointed towards original research. Another attempt has been made to re-add the material, this time citing sources. Unfortunately the sources do not support the claims made by the added content or infringe Wikipedia's policy on citing Wikipedia as a source. Nobody is disputing the fact that Cochin Jews did migrate to Malaysia. The fact that there exists a large community of descendants of Kerala migrants of various faiths (Muslim, Hindu and Christian) definitely implies that. We just need reliable sources that can support that claim. I would suggest that the sources be shared in the Talk Page prior to re-addition of the material. Personal attacks and sockpuppetry are also frowned upon in Wikipedia and there seems to be enough anecdotal evidence from past edits that this may be the case as far as those advocating the wholesale addition of this material, without reference to WP's policies, are concerned. - Bob K | Talk 13:02, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Sephardic Descent of some Kristang Families - Question Opened to the Floor

The primary sources that indicate some Kristang people are descended from Sephardic Jews and the Marrano communities would be the paper published in the April 1950 edition of The Jewish Quarterly Review entitled "New Sources for the History of the Jewish Diaspora in Asia in the 16th Century" which says that such communities existed in Goa and Malacca. However, no contemporary accounts exist except for self-identification by some Kristang families and individuals, of whom almost all of which are not practicing Jews, except for cultural identification as secular Jews. Its not my hypothesis. Its a published academic paper in the April 1950 edition of the Jewish Quarterly Review written by Walter Fishchel. You can take up any disagreements with the University of Pennsylvania which publishes the Review. The only 3rd party references to the Jewish community in Malaysia refer mainly to the Baghdadi Jews and some marginal material on the possible Marrano descent of some Kristang people. Some references also refer to other Ashkenazi Jews. These are all indicated in the article. Should any other 3rd party references be found that refer to the those of Cochin Jew descent, I am sure nobody would have a problem adding it to the article. Current situation

The article says exactly nothing about the present situation. I recognize that name of the article is "History of the Jews in Malaysia", but it starts out with "Malaysian Jews"...without ever mentioning whether or not there exist any living modern current present-day Malaysian Jews, apart from a single link to the JewishVirtualLibrary, which does not cite its source.
