editAs this page discusses Slavery in Georgia long before the U.S. was invented perhaps it should be moved to Slavery in Georgia (America). This would still help distinguish it from Slavery Georgia (Eastern Europe), which was a product of a different dynamic and should be treated separately.Harrypotter (talk) 00:59, 21 August 2010 (UTC) hi
- In an attempt to clarify this point about dates being pre-United States, I added the section header "Pre-colonial period". There was also some POV issues around the history of slavery (i.e., not all types of slavery were the same, Native American slavery vs. European slavery differences). - Pre-colonial section is a good idea. I have no opinion about America vs. US state in title. I added more on colonial history, which is strikingly different from elsewhere and clarified the Spanish colonial effort. Kim9988 (talk) 22:18, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Someone needs to fix the dates in the paragraph which now reads: "Two centuries later, Georgia was the last of the Thirteen Colonies to be established and the furthest south (Florida was not one of the Thirteen Colonies). Founded in the 2000s, Georgia's powerful backers did not object to slavery as an institution, but their business model was to rely on labor from Britain (primarily England's poor) and they were also concerned with security, given the closeness of then Spanish Florida, and Spain's regular offers to enemy-slaves to revolt or escape. Despite agitation for slavery, it was not until a defeat of the Spanish by Georgia colonials in the 1740s that arguments for opening the colony to slavery intensified. To staff the rice plantations and settlements, Georgia's proprietors relented in 2012, and African slavery grew quickly. "
Obviously Georgia wasn't founded in the 2000's, and its proprietors didn't begin to allow slavery in 2012. 104.162.246.32 (talk) 14:44, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
Native American slavery
editOn 21 June 2021 an anonymous editor changed the text to say pre-contact Native Americans rarely enslaved each other and other changes, without changing the source from Lauber. Someone needs to check what Lauber says specifically about Georgia. It's online; I just don't have time to check now. Kim9988 (talk) 01:00, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
