The claim "Around 500-600BC Taoists in China and Buddhists in India began to develop meditative practices" is repeated from an unreferenced statement in Everly & Lating. At most, the claim should read that the earliest documentary evidence of meditative practices in China date from around 500-600BCE - there is no way of establishing when the 'Taoist' meditative tradition began in China unless you assert that Lao-tzu is a historical figure with a definite date, and therefore meditation in China prior to him wasn't 'Taoist'. Meditation...China...Zen

"the Vimalakirti Sutra which dates to 100CE included a number of passages on meditation and enlightened wisdom, clearly pointing to Zen.[5]"

The pointer to Zen, as opposed to any other form of Buddhism, is not clear to this reader, and perhaps to anyone who hasn't read the Sutra. Could you please explain how you make this leap?

Contemplation in Vedas is not Meditation.

The vague mention of "meditation" in the original Vedas is only a contemplation or reflection, it is completely different from meditation as we know it today, which is a mental exercise focusing all attention on an object. If that was meditation, then meditation is something that has always existed because even animals can be distracted in thoughts. Moreover, the book used as a source is a book of clinical psychology written by two Americans in 1989, so it cannot be used as a source in an article of ancient and controversial history.
