Primary education in Japanese edit

Modern schools were formed, with widespread establishment of primary schools, taught in Japanese

I removed the part about "taught in Japanese" because it doesn't fit with what we know about literacy rates and the prevalence of Japanese language in society. When Mandarin Chinese was the language of instruction after the Chinese arrived, it quickly became the language most people know and quite often the lingua-franca. However I've seen no indication Japanese took on this role, leading me to doubt the statement. Literacy rate increases indicate that the education system was widespread and effective, so it would seem Japanese would be a much more common language had it been the language of instruction. The whole article needs more sources, but this item is particularly dubious. Readin (talk) 06:26, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
