History of Bombay in Independent IndiaHistory of Mumbai in Independent India — Currently (in Independent India), Bombay is called Mumbai. The parent article is called History of Mumbai. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:32, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose as exercise in anachronism; move the parent article. The official change of name was in the 1990s; during most of the independence of India, this city was called Bombay. It would be far more useful to include the date (and perhaps the unfortunate circumstances) and to cite the continuing local usage. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 04:26, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: During most of the period in Independent India (~ 50 years), the city was known as Bombay; as compared to Mumbai (~15 years). The parent article might be called History of Mumbai, because the city was known as Bombay only during the British period and most of Independent India. 1000s of years before, prior to the British period, during Islamic and indigenous empire rule, the city was not known as Bombay. Hence, we name the parent article as History of Mumbai as a general convention. Xavier449 (talk) 10:18, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose for now. Let's move it in 2043, when it will have been "Mumbai" for at least half the period in question. (Among the siblings of this article are History of Bombay under Portuguese rule (1534–1661) and History of Bombay under British rule; they're surely not to be moved, which shows that the name of the parent article is not determiner. Shreevatsa (talk) 16:18, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. Have a look at the content of the article: most of it is about Mumbai before the renaming. I think it should be 'Bombay' in the article name. TheMikeWassup doc? 12:18, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Wikipedia guidelines are that when considering a place over a period of time, we use the current name. Hence we have History of Gdańsk, not History of Danzig; History of Tokyo, not History of Edo; History of New York City, not History of New Amsterdam and History of Istanbul, not History of Constantinople. When we refer exclusively to a specific past time period when the city was known by a different name, then we normally use the old name. Skinsmoke (talk) 02:53, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, that's good reason for why History of Bombay should be History of Mumbai (as it indeed is), but this article refers exclusively to a specific time period, during most of which it was "Bombay". I do see the argument for thinking of the article, since it barely touches the present, as looking back from the present, but I don't feel it's sufficiently strong… Shreevatsa (talk) 05:31, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Support We should use the correct government name in the present day for a living city like Mumbai. Zuggernaut (talk) 04:40, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per PMAnderson above; since the name change has been recent and the city was known by the name Bombay for most of the period since Indian independence, I think it would be generally anachronistic to use Mumbai in the title. Also, regarding History of Mumbai, I think Skinsmoke's reply above would hold good. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 09:24, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose City has been Mumbai for just about 15 years, was Bombay for over 200 hence makes sense to keep it as Bombay for now. Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 06:18, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
