Talk:Higher education in Ontario

Background

This page was initially setup as part of a grad course on higher education policies in Canada (ADHE 536 at UBC). The launch and addition of contents coincides with a conference scheduled for June 1 to 3 (CSSHE) at UBC. The class will setup data structures for all the provinces, the federal government, and territories over the period of a week. Most of us aren't familiar with wikipedia editing and we're looking forward to your help as we enter the information we've researched. Adhe536ontario2008 (talk) 20:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

To clarify, the intent is not to post original research nor host a class project. Instead, our "project" is to make an appropriate contribution to wikipedia by

• gathering relevant information within wikipedia and, where appropriate, external links/references on higher education in Canada and
• posting it according to the wikipedia Manual of Style.

In short, we're here to help, play by the rules, and make a positive contribution to the information available on wikipedia (e.g., by province). clarification of the term "bicameral" needed

The following sentence needs to be clarified. Does the bicameral model refer to the Canadian government or the goverance of universities?

In 1906, controversy over the role of the Ontario government and the leadership of the University of Toronto led to the Flavelle Commission that articulated a separation of powers that led to the widespread adoption of the bicameral governance model in Canada.

image choices

Hey, nice article. I think the 1st image (map of Ontario within Canada) and the 3nd image (photo of a legislative building) are too prominent in the article, given that it is supposed to be about higher education. The lead photo is particularly important. Perhaps the aerial view of Queens College could be moved to the top right, or perhaps another photo depicting education could be found? The map of Ontario within Canada is still useful, but could be reduced in size and, i think, should not be the very first image. Thanks for your feedback. Check out the changes. I thought a graduation photo would represent higher education from the output perspective. Hard to find pictures of the "process" without emphasizing the building or university. Also, reduced the size of the parliament photo & added the map there because it relates to structure. Review of article and future tasks

This article is now in decent shape, and I've promoted it to C class from start class. With only a little more work, it can be raised to B class. Here's a list of areas the article doesn't yet cover, or in which it is too brief (this was mentioned on a user's talk page, but deserves to be here too):

• History - needs expansion; establishment of universities and colleges (some are already included)
• Demographics - needs inclusion; trends in enrollment and acceptance to higher education throughout the past century (total, and per capita), trends in vocational choices (eg - decline of mining and agricultural training, increase in information sciences and research); women and minorities in higher education
• Inter-provincial and international credit and program recognition
• Undergraduate and graduate fields of study, including demographics
• Research and its funding (including subjects like the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and MaRS Discovery District)
• Program collaborations between universities (one example is Waterloo and Laurier)
• Introduction of new fields of study (eg - nanotechnology)
• Innovative programs (eg - Waterloo co-op system)
• Funding in general - how much do universities and colleges receive from public and private sources
• Donations to universities and colleges (alumni; donations-in-kind; donations to establish specific programs; donations of materials, such as book collections or art)
• Government: including Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation; education budget; role of university and college administration in collaborating with government agencies and ministers
• Relationship with business (sponsorship or funding of research)
• Other external collaborations (medical research in Toronto-Hamilton-London corridors, between hospitals and universities; Guelph's agricultural research, such as the Muck Crops Research Station, and collaboration with NASA research)
