Talk:Herman's World of Sporting Goods

The idea that "Herman's could not compete with the warehouse size stores of Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority, as most locations were in malls or strip malls" is false; the chain was doing well against the "big box stores." Its troubles began with its purchase by the British Supermarket giant, Dee, which over-expanded Herman's in unsuitable markets and used the chain's liquid assets to pay back its parent's debt. A comically inept team of "turnaround" experts was dispatched to try to save the company, but their lack of experience in American retailing in general and sporting goods in particular virtually ensured the company's death spiral into bankruptcy.
