Merge; Notability

Please do not merge this article into Mt. Rainier National park or the Paradise page. There are several links to this specific page, and as the building is scheduled for destruction within a year or so, it will become less appropriate as a section in a more general page. There is plenty of historical information on this building/architecture, and I think it will be able to stand alone as its own article. Natevw (talk) 20:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree that this can stand alone - the architects are significant, and there aren't many volcano-shaped buildings around. I was going to create an article myself after doing Mission 66 but never got around to it. A picture would be nice to have. Acroterion _(talk) 20:42, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

After significantly enlarging the article, I've taken the liberty of removing the merge tag. Hope that's not out of line; feel free to add it back if you aren't convinced. I do have some recent pictures of my own of the center and will try find one I can contribute. There are also a number of historical photos around (see references for starters) that could contribute to the article, but we'd have to figure out their copyright status. It looks like it is going somewhere, so I don't object to you removing the merge tag. However, the article is still in danger from the deletionists, as you still haven't established notability beyond a mention in the local newspaper. Surely there is a national fuss about its demolition? I suggest you make a copy on your userpage, just in case. While I haven't found hard statistics for this visitor center itself, the center has been in a quite popular area of the park for over 40 years. The whole park has gotten between 1.5–2.5 million visitors a year ([1]) and, taking a percentage of those through the years, an incredible amount of people have visited or at least hiked around the building. According to http://www.nps.gov/mora/current/VSP.pdf, about 62% of Rainier visitors go to the Paradise area, and 53% of (total) visitors visited a visitor center. While I'm not sure if any of that is appropriate for the article itself, I think those numbers make a strong case for notability. (Other factors could be the significance within the Mission 66 project, the controversial modernist architecture, and the cultural significance even just as measured by amount of Google web results.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Natevw (talk • contribs) 23:27, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
